To whom it may concern:
It has come to our attention that your government has been complicit in the murder of Honduran environmental activist Berta Caceres due to your government’s refusal to provide her with the police protection she needed and requested after having received multiple death threats from several sources – including agents of your government – due to her stalwart defense of indigenous peoples’ rights and her opposition to the construction of the Agua Zarca dam.
The sole witness to the murder of our sister Berta Caceres was Gustavo Soto, a Mexican environmental activist, who was almost shot to death during the murder of Caceres. Your government now seeks to hold Soto against his will, claiming that it is necessary in order to investigate the murder of Caceres; yet according to our information Soto has already given his testimony and wishes to leave Honduras due to his completely justified fear for his life if he remains in Honduras. He is now essentially being kept imprisoned in the Mexican Embassy by your government.
We demand that your government release our brother Gustavo Soto immediately and allow him to return to Mexico as he wishes. We also demand that you bring to justice the killers of Berta Caceres. Over one hundred environmental activists have been murdered since your government has come to power; this appears to be anything but coincidental. The workers of the world are not fooled by your government’s pretense at innocence. The workers of the world will be watching your future actions very closely; we already have reason to believe that elements of your government were deeply involved in the murder of our sister Berta Caceres and the attempted murder of our brother Gustavo Soto, as well as the murders of at least a hundred environmental activists. If anything untoward should happen to Gustavo Soto we and the entire working class of Honduras, the USA and the world will hold you, Sr. Presidente, personally, and your government, generally responsible. Read this Amnesty International communique if you need more information in regards to the Soto case http://wp.me/a2pWGj-LG.
