The USA Now Has A President That Perfectly Reflects the “Soul” of It’s Demoralized, De-Unionized Heartland

“You can always count on Americans to do the right thing – after they’ve tried everything else.” – Sir Winston Churchill

“Toute nation a le gouvernement qu’elle mérite.”  (Every nation gets the government it deserves.)  – Joseph de Maistre

“This whole election is being rigged. The whole thing is one big fix. One big ugly lie. It’s one big fix.” – Donald Trump

“Even a broken clock tells the correct time twice a day.” – Anonymous

The election of Donald Trump as President of the United States came as a shock to many observers around the world.  Professional political pollsters, particularly, were exposed as the charlatans they are by their wildly inaccurate predictions made through the last weeks of the campaign.  The New York Times, America’s “Newspaper of Record” dropped all pretense of “journalistic objectivity” to campaign furiously for the hideous Democratic Party candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton, turning their newspaper into a de facto arm of the Clinton campaign.

The NY Times and almost all other major bourgeois press outlets railed 24/7 against the equally repulsive Republican candidate, slumlord and swindler of small businessmen and working class college hopefuls Donald Trump, piling up devastating evidence of his contempt for women, handicapped people and immigrants in particular.  In spite of the damning audio recordings and accusations of several women of his misogynist tendencies broadcast on all news media for the final weeks of the campaign, Hillary Clinton was unable to put Trump in her rear-view mirror.  Trump, just a day before the election, still trailed Clinton by just 4 percentage points in the WSJ’s polls.

The pinnacle of pro-Clinton propaganda was reached on November 3 when the magazine “The Atlantic” published an incredible puff piece on Clinton that will stand for all time as one of the most  hilariously fatuous and wildly inaccurate pieces of political journalism ever penned.  Written by Chimamanda Adichie (seemingly while curled up comfortably  in Hillary’s lap), it was entitled “What Hillary Clinton’s Fans Love About Her”:

“We do not see, often enough, the people who love Hillary Clinton, who support her because of her qualifications rather than because of her unqualified opponent, who empathize with her. Yet millions of Americans, women and men, love her intelligence, her industriousness, her grit; they feel loyal to her, they will vote with enthusiasm for her.

“Human beings change as they grow, but a person’s history speaks to who she is. There are millions who admire the tapestry of Hillary Clinton’s past: the first-ever student commencement speaker at Wellesley speaking boldly about making the impossible possible, the Yale law student interested in the rights of migrant farmworkers, the lawyer working with the Children’s Defense Fund, the first lady trying to make health care accessible for all Americans […]

“There are people who love how cleanly she slices through policy layers, how thoroughly she digests the small print […]

“They have confidence in her. There are people who rage at the media on her behalf, who see the coverage she too often receives as unfair. There are people who in a quiet, human way wish her well. There are people who, when Hillary Clinton becomes the first woman to be president of the United States, will weep from joy.

“Hillary Clinton was guilty immediately when she stepped into the view of the American public as the first lady of Arkansas. She was a lawyer full of dreams. She had made sacrifices for the man she loved, waived her plans, and moved to his state. But she also dared to think herself her husband’s equal, to assume herself competent enough to take on expanding access to healthcare and reforming the Arkansas public education system […]”.

“Because she is already considered guilty in a vague and hazy way, there is a longing for her to be demonstrably guilty of something. Other words have been repeated over and over, with no context, until they have begun to breathe and thrum with life. Especially “emails.” The press coverage of “emails” has become an unclear morass where “emails” must mean something terrible, if only because of how often it is invoked.

“The people who love Hillary Clinton know that the IT system at the State Department is old and stodgy, nothing like a Blackberry’s smooth whirl. Hillary Clinton was used to her Blackberry, and wanted to keep using it when she became secretary of state…”

It has to be read to be believed.  How much does it cost to hire someone to write sickening, fawning garbage like that?  How can an editor with any sense at all dare to present such a thing to the public?

The constant stream of evidence of Hillary Clinton’s willing servility towards the US capitalist class brought forth by the WikiLeaks organization was like a firehose of condemnation turned against Clinton for the final month of the campaign.  Hacked emails spirited from her top campaign manager John Podesta’s computers revealed how the Clinton camp’s near-total control of the primary election machinery of the Democratic Party had sabotaged the chimerical Bernie Sanders campaign from day one.  The WikiLeaks document trove also detailed how the Clintonites had conspired to use their agents in the US bourgeois press to build up the weakest of the Republican candidates so as to provide Hillary with the weakest possible opponent from the Republicans’ Augean stable of rotten, greed-driven swine.  Many commentators have awarded the laurel wreath to WikiLeaks for torpedoing the Hillary Clinton campaign with their steady drip of exposures of the criminality of Hillary Clinton and her family’s deeply corrupt Clinton Foundation, awash in barely concealed campaign donations from some of the most reactionary regimes on the planet.  But WikiLeaks’ efforts, though significant, were not responsible for the humiliation Clinton suffered at the sweaty, grasping hands of Donald Trump.

Post-election, the Clintonites desperately sought to lay the blame for their candidate’s stunning defeat at the feet of Dr. Jill Stein of the Green Party and of Gary Johnson of the Libertarians – both of whom did, indeed, to their credit, succeed in taking a great many votes away from the Democrats and the Republicans.  The Democratic apologists’ shrill condemnations of the third parties for having the nerve to actually run candidates for real against their pre-selected winner of the Presidential race demonstrates better than any communist polemic the utter fraud that is the US political system.  Third party candidates, it seems, can exist, but not if they will actually participate in the final vote.  They are supposed to run during the primaries only, in order to give the completely phony US democracy a thin veneer of legitimacy, and then fold up their tents like dutiful and loyal servants of the two “major” “official” political parties of the US.

Donald Trump won a great deal of support from the mostly white, male working class that elected him by blathering about how the US election process is “rigged”.  Here Trump simply pointed out the obvious, while omitting the most important aspect of the rigged nature of the US political system: it is indeed rigged – to benefit people like him.  Wealthy white males have always been at the pinnacle of US politics since the wealthiest man in the young USA – George Washington – ran for president.  Donald Trump stands elected as US President not in spite of the fact that the US elections are rigged but because they are rigged to benefit white men of his social class: the capitalist class.

Hillary Clinton was defeated because she was a monstrous candidate obviously completely in the pockets of the Wall St. bankers and brokers who had paid her millions of dollars for speeches in which she told them exactly what they wanted to hear from a politician running for president.   Clinton lost because she’s a vicious, heartless, murderous, grasping beast who clearly would do anything – a-ny-thing – to become President of the United States.  To raise money for her election as the champion of women all over the world she openly sold herself not just to the US capitalist class but to some of the most disgusting women-hating regimes on the face of the Earth – like Saudi Arabia – for cold, hard cash.  She and her cohorts – whom she praised in her concession speech as representing “the best” the US has to offer – conspired to deny millions of Democratic Party voters the right to fully participate in the Democratic primary when her campaign deliberately and calculatedly plotted to destroy the candidacy of fellow Democrat Bernie Sanders.  The contempt of her co-conspirators for fair play in a political contest between loyal Democratic Party flacks was so boundless that she left nothing to chance in elbowing her way to the Democratic nomination, even to the extent of having her agents in the news media obtain debate questions in advance of the phony “debates” between herself and Sanders.

Hillary Rodham Clinton lost because she was a far less convincing liar than the real estate huckster Donald Trump.  The only people she told the truth to were the 1-percenters who run the USA and whose money and support she needed to obtain in order to become their anointed presidential candidate in 2016.  For a couple hundred thousand dollars a pop, she made speech after speech to the kings of Wall St., promising them in no uncertain terms that if they backed her they’d be running the tables in Washington for yet another four years.

WikiLeaks provided us with all of the damning evidence of the contents of Hillary Clinton’s highly-paid speaking tours of the halls of actual political power in the US’ phony democracy – which Clinton herself wisely refused to release to the public.  In a speech given to the Goldman Sachs AIMS Alternative Investments Symposium on 24 October 2013 Hillary told her sponsors: “It’s still happening, as you know. People are looking back and trying to, you know, get compensation for bad mortgages and all the rest of it in some of the agreements that are being reached. There’s nothing magic about regulations, too much is bad, too little is bad. How do you get to the golden key, how do we figure out what works? And the people that know the industry better than anybody are the people who work in the industry.” In other words, if anything is wrong with Wall St., it should be the Wall St. insiders who decide how to fix it, she sang to her paying audience of top capitalists.  To Clinton, the millions who make up the US working class are nothing but an ignorant herd of meddling outsiders.

The more Hillary Clinton appeared in public, the more convinced prospective voters became convinced of her vast insincerity in espousing her fake concern for the plight of working-class families in the US struggling to keep a roof over their families’ heads.  No one believed a thing she said; no one was convinced that she had any other motive for becoming President other than pure egotistical self-aggrandizement and of course to stuff her and her family’s pockets with money by doing favors for everyone who had bankrolled her campaign, from Goldman Sachs to the government of Saudi Arabia.  Hillary Clinton seemed to represent everyone EXCEPT the vast working class majority that makes up the citizenry of every capitalist nation-state including the “classless” “egalitarian” USA.

Hillary Clinton’s pretense of being the #1 champion of women’s rights simply by becoming the first female president of the United States was exposed for the fraud it was by the WikiLeaks revelations that the Clinton Foundation had received millions of dollars from reactionary woman-hating regimes throughout the Muslim world, like Saudi Arabia, whose government she made sure was showered with military supplies used to support the even more reactionary and anti-woman cretins of ISIL/ISIS when she was Secretary of State.  Hillary was never a champion of anyone other than Hillary.  Electing Hillary Rodham Clinton President would have done no more to advance the cause of women than did the election of the Afghan-mullah-loving Margaret Thatcher.  No intelligent person in the world doubts that a woman can run a major modern nation-state.  The United States lost its chance to be the first to have a female head of state decades ago.  Hillary Clinton would have been as big a disaster for the advancement of women’s rights as President as she was as Secretary of State.

Paradoxically, it seems to many, the workers of the US – primarily white males but also a surprising number of white women and a large percentage of US Hispanics and even black workers – were convinced that the bombastic, racist, neofascist huckster real estate swindler Donald Trump was the candidate that truly represented their best interests.  This may seem paradoxical but in reality there is no paradox.  In Donald Trump a large percentage of the US working class finds a mirror image of their racist, greedy, narcissistic selves.  After decades of attacks on the workers’ movement that has driven millions of workers out of the trade unions, the entire concept of the superiority of collective struggle of the working class has been subsumed under a tidal wave of capitalist propaganda and a brutal driving down of wages and benefits for the working class of the USA.  This conscious destruction of the workers’ movement by the US capitalist class and their criminal co-conspirators in the AFL-CIO hierarchy has led to a complete collapse of working class solidarity and its replacement by a “look out for #1” mentality that apes the self-aggrandizing, selfish Ayn Rand-inspired Libertarian ideology of increasing numbers of the capitalist class themselves.  The corruption of the bourgeoisie and their systematic corruption of the bribed trade union bureaucracy that has hamstrung every attempt by the working class at successful collective struggle to defend workers interests over the past 40 years has led inexorably to the corruption of the morals of the working class itself.  “Fuck the next guy – I’m going to get mine first” has become the “philosophy” of a large percentage of the US working class; and so they have ditched the idea of collective struggle through trade union organization and have raised up on their shoulders the hideous caricature of  the “self-made man”: Donald Trump, a billionaire born with a golden spoon in his mouth who never gave a shit about the working class in his entire disgusting money-grubbing life.

Donald Trump perfectly reflects the moral bankruptcy of the US ruling capitalist class in general as well as a similar degeneracy that has mushroomed among a large and growing section of the increasingly desperate and demoralized US working class that has seen its standard of living steadily hammered down year after brutal year since the late 1960s.  With trade union membership in steady decline, the working class has become imbued with the corrupt Libertarian philosophy of the capitalist class that sees poor people as “freeloaders” and unionized workers as “overpaid” and pampered privileged parasites on the national economy.  “Selfishness is the highest virtue” taught the cheap Hollywood screenwriter Ayn Rand; this vicious “philosophy” is at the root of supposedly “egalitarian” Libertarian politics, and has been embraced and proselytized by millions of desperate workers.  Unionized  nurses, teachers and city workers and poor people of every race – but particularly blacks and immigrants –  have become the enemy of the massively non- and even anti-union US working class, egged on by bought-and-paid-for pro-capitalist demagogues from Ronald Reagan to Bill Clinton to Donald Trump.  The US capitalist class and their news media outlets have convinced a large majority of the demoralized US working class that it is not the billionaire capitalist who is the source of the workers’ misery, but the immigrant worker crossing the Mexican border to try to make a decent living for his or her family.  It is not the swindling bankers who have robbed the workers of their income but the black workers on welfare who are doing it.  Never mind that all economic data proves that none of these racist lies are true.  This racist propaganda, spewed by Republican and Democratic politicians and by the US news media for decades has done its nefarious work.  Now we have begun to see the emergence of the fascist scum from the margins of US society starting to become emboldened by hearing their racist ideology parroted by “mainstream” politicians like Trump and seeing their racist “solutions” to the “immigrant problem” put into practice by the Democratic Obama Administration.

This 2016 US Presidential election shows to us that the US working class, in its present disorganized and demoralized state, with no revolutionary socialist leadership to speak of, with the trade union movement in free-fall and supporting the same anti-immigrant proposals as the racists, stands ready to fall victim to fascism in all its savagery.  Prepared by two decades of nearly non-stop war against Middle Eastern and Asian countries with large Muslim populations, the US working class has in large numbers become utterly intolerant of Muslims – who make up nearly a third of the world’s population.  Driven to a mad fury by the neofascist slogans “Make America Great Again” and a fulsome hatred of immigrants not seen in the USA since the days of the “Know-Nothings” the USA looks to us in 2016 like Germany circa 1938.  Millions of US workers have degenerated morally into vicious, greedy, racist and desperate thugs who don’t give a shit HOW MANY people the US military slaughters so long as the price of gasoline stays below $5 a gallon.  Trump’s election isn’t an aberration: it’s the culmination of decades of attacks on the working class and minorities by the Republicans; and even more so by the “friends of labor” Democrats like Bill and Hillary Clinton, whose racist program to “end welfare as we know it” and whose “truth in sentencing” laws fostered decades of brutalization and victimization of black and Hispanic workers.  Seeing no way out of the “hope”-less and “change”-less blind alley into which the Democrats under Barack Obama have led them, and seeing the promising futures and those of their children and grandchildren melt away as their wages and benefits decline, the white working class is embracing neofascist ideology and striking out on the road towards an American Fascism that could well lead inexorably – and rapidly – towards World War Three.  The only way to prevent this descent of the US into the very same abyss that destroyed Germany in just 12 years of unparalleled savagery is for the working class to be won over to the program of revolutionary Trotskyism which alone can overthrow the racist, exploitative capitalist system and to replace it with an egalitarian working class socialist republic.  Only a party such as this can organize the working class to effectively smash the growing fascist menace being unleashed by the US capitalist class, hell-bent on global domination.  This is the kind of political party we hope to build in the coming years right here in the belly of the U.S. imperialist beast.

If that section of the US working class that continues to fight for the rights of immigrants and minorities does not immediately stop tilting at the windmills of impotent “speaking truth to power” and begin to organize a fight to take power directly into the hands of the working class itself, fascism will soon triumph in the USA.  Only a powerful working class force like the communist movement proved capable of effectively fighting fascism in the 1920s and 1930s.  It was the communist-led Resistance movements of Europe that led the opposition to fascism during Hitler’s bloody reign of terror; it was the USSR that finally crushed the “Thousand-Year Reich” and that drove Hitler and his inner circle to suicide in their hole in the ground in Berlin.  It was the heroic communists of Asia – particularly China and Korea – who led the victory over Japanese fascism and, immediately afterward, to new victories over world capitalism and US imperialism.  Those heroic communist movements were successful in spite of the crippling effects of their Stalinist and Maoist bureaucratic leaderships which usurped political power from the working class and led their revolutions into nationalist dead ends from which they still haven’t escaped.  A new Trotskyist movement in the USA is the only hope the working class has of creating a militant and positively creative force that can unite workers of all races, creeds and ethnic backgrounds into a revolutionary force that can crush any and all fascist opposition and lead a truly egalitarian revolutionary workers movement like the one led by Lenin and his Bolsheviks after WWI.  “The capitalist system must die so that the working class may live” is our slogan.  “The capitalist system must die so that fascism can never rise again” must be the principle upon which the now decrepit US workers movement rallies itself around in a massive fight to restore the power of the communist-led US workers movement of the 1930s.  Failure to achieve these goals will lead to the triumph of fascism in the USA and ultimately to the total destruction of the US by the combined forces of the entire world, which will unite to smash US fascism just as they smashed the fascism of the German, Italian and Japanese Nazis in the ’40s.

Time is running out for the US working class to organize itself and turn the direction of the US around into the direction of workers socialist revolution.  Join with us to build a socialist future for the workers of the world through the overthrow of a capitalist system that threatens to plunge the planet into a war that will kill tens or even hundreds of millions of workers and that could damage the planet beyond repair.  The victory of Donald Trump is a clarion call to all workers in the USA to begin immediately to take up the tremendous tasks that face the US working class to build the revolutionary workers party that will lead the American Socialist Revolution in the USA , throughout the Americas and around the world.

Movie Review – CITIZENFOUR: “Speaking Truth to Power” is not What Needs to Be Done (* out of 5)

[Note: this review is being simultaneously published by the Independent Workers Party of Chicago and the Friends of WikiLeaks – Chicago on the respective websites of both groups.]

CITIZENFOUR – a film by Laura Poitras  https://citizenfourfilm.com/

We expected a lot from Laura Poitras’ new film CITIZENFOUR; we were massively disappointed.  With ex- CIA/NSA contract worker Edward Snowden still stuck in exile in Russia and the citizenry of the United States far more interested in the latest shiny objects for sale at the Apple Store than in fighting for their rapidly disappearing Constitutional rights, we had hoped that this film would be a clarion call to the workers of the United States to take action in their own self-defense by standing up in support of Snowden and his fellow heroic whistle-blowers Chelsea Manning, Julian Assange, Jeremy Hammond and others.  Instead what we get is a very tepid and shallow overview of “the story so far” of the world-shaking revelations made by Snowden exposing the US Government’s global espionage network that monitors and stores for future use every cellphone call, email message and the wealth of information derivable from our daily movements as recorded by our cellphones every day.  CITIZENFOUR should be like a nuclear howitzer blasting chunks out of the edifice of US and British imperialism; instead its effect is like that of a dozen pies thrown in the faces of a gang of war criminals.  You could say that CITIZENFOUR pulled all its punches… except for the fact that it never even attempts to throw any.  This is, by the way, the primary reason why it’s getting such great reviews from the bourgeois press.

So far as we can tell, the reason that Poitras doesn’t engage in aggressive political “agitprop” – a fact that nearly every reviewer from the bourgeois press extols as one of her film’s strengths – is apparently that she has no political axe to grind – or more accurately, she is a liberal bourgeois democratic reformist whose political aspirations rise no higher than to being one who “speaks truth to power”.  What this means in practice is that she and others like her – including Assange and Snowden – willingly self-limit the extent of their political activities to begging the “legitimate powers that be” to behave themselves and to urging the paid employees of the US capitalist ruling class that have set up the global espionage network – the bourgeois politicians in the “Five Eyes” nations – to start taking their alleged “responsibilities” to the citizens of their respective nations seriously by curbing the “excesses” that they themselves signed off on!

This kind of “inside the box” thinking may seem strange coming from the likes of Poitras, Assange, Snowden and Greenwald; but if we analyze their political philosophies in more detail it doesn’t seem strange at all.  Unless a person has consciously broken away from the worthless, selfish, greedy corporatist ideology of the capitalist system and has become a conscious Marxist revolutionary dedicated to the overthrow of the capitalist class and its economic system, one’s politics are going to be by definition REFORMIST at best; and so how can a non-revolutionary do anything else but simply beg the bourgeoisie to straighten up and fly right?  If you believe that the capitalist economic system is “the best of all possible economic systems”, and that only the capitalist class and its favored institutions of higher learning are capable of producing “legitimate” political leaders – where does that leave you politically?  It leaves you “speaking truth to power” like a good, loyal (if somewhat uppity) wage-slave!

Is CITIZENFOUR worth seeing?  For us, it was worth the price of admission just to see the “Dream Team” of Snowden, Greenwald and Poitras in the same room preparing to launch one of the world’s most impressive exposes of massive governmental abuses of power affecting everyone on the planet who has access to a telephone and/or a computer connected to the Internet.  This NSA spy scandal makes Watergate look like a pillow fight!  But the cursory overview made by the film of the extent of the revelations can’t be very compelling to anyone who hasn’t been following the story over the past year or so.  The movie barely describes the NSA and GCHQ-run “Five Eyes” espionage juggernaut; nor does it clearly show the threats of assassination and worse levied against Snowden, Assange and Greenwald by various US Government scumbags through the news media for daring to bring all this criminality into the light of day.  And, having not even really covered any of these issues, the film fails to even attempt to engage the audience in the critically important work of what is to be done: building new political parties to take down those that have erected the Big Brother spy apparatus that is intended to be used primarily to rapidly identify political opponents of the US, UK, Australian, Canadian and New Zealand Governments INSIDE  THEIR RESPECTIVE NATION-STATES!  This is, after all, the real purpose of all this espionage: to create a database of the day-to-day activities of every citizen of the world’s leading capitalist states in order to identify and neutralize them if they should ever seek to organize seriously threatening political opposition to the neo-fascist police states being set up in the US and its partners in the “Five Eyes” nations.  The primary target of all this espionage isn’t foreign terrorism: the target is the domestic working-class political opposition that – if it turns in a revolutionary socialist direction – potentially threatens the continued class rule of the capitalist classes of the world.  The capitalist classes of the US and UK in particular have absolutely no intention of sharing political power with the numerically and economically vastly superior working class that creates all the wealth under capitalism.  Any attempt by the domestic working classes of the US or UK to throw off the yoke of capitalist exploitation through political or economic strike action will immediately be placed under the microscope of the global espionage network, where the movement’s leaders will be quickly identified, isolated and “neutralized” – physically if the capitalists deem it to be necessary.  This is precisely what makes so extremely dangerous  the Obama Administration’s precedent-setting legal findings asserting that a sitting US President has the “right” to order the assassination of any US citizen whose writings or friends and associates he – or more accurately his employers in the US capitalist class – do not like.

This is not crazy commie paranoia speaking here: the Obama Administration has openly admitted that it has murdered four US citizens in drone strikes overseas – that we know of; and the US government maintains a “watch list” of its perceived opponents that already had a million people listed on it in 2009 – and it is being constantly updated. In 2013 it was reported that an additional 450,000 people were “nominated” to be added to the list – with few of the nominees escaping that dubious honor.

The faith in the hired political lackeys of the bourgeoisie implicitly espoused by Poitras, Greenwald, Snowden and Assange; their placid belief that steady pressure applied to the so-called liberal “left-wing” and Libertarian sections of the political class will ultimately win the day and allow the necessary political reforms to be enacted is, quite frankly, absurd – and evidence of a political immaturity in all of them that is quite shocking, especially considering what they have learned since Snowden came forward with his revelations.  Those actual members of the US or UK capitalist classes who go to see CITIZENFOUR will undoubtedly feel a tremendous relief in their discovery that these potentially dangerous opponents of the capitalist class are, in fact, posing no serious threat to the status quo at all.  The capitalists and their spies and hired guns can sleep a bit easier knowing that Poitras, Assange, Snowden and Greenwald – for all their genuine courage and excellent work in exposing the crimes of the ruling class – have set for themselves only the pathetic task of “speaking truth to power”.   That is something that the ruling class can listen to from Assange, Snowden – or anyone else, for that matter – for ever, condescendingly acknowledging and even thanking them profusely for their heroic selflessness in bringing to the world’s attention these “serious issues” – while doing absolutely nothing substantial to change the workings of the national security state at all.  Viewed in this way, CITIZENFOUR becomes just another pointless pantomime rebellion in the long, bloody history of capitalism.  The capitalists will, first of all, breathe a deep sigh of relief now that it’s clear that the film isn’t presenting an indictment of the capitalist class or their system; then, having been let largely off the hook by the film’s protagonists, we expect the capitalist class to continue to do what they have in fact been doing: applauding the film.   Perhaps Poitras and Greenwald will be invited to  testify before the Senate Intelligence Committee to speak “truth to power” on CSPAN; or at the Council on Foreign Relations… or at the United Nations or one of the capitalist soirees like the annual hand-wringing exercise at Davos, Switzerland.   Finally, perhaps, the capitalist class will direct the editors of their news media conglomerates to heap praise on the film and even to heartily recommend that it be awarded the Palme ‘d’Or, or even an Oscar or two!  This is how activist filmmakers like Poitras and investigative journalists like Greenwald are co-opted by the capitalist class and transformed from courageous opponents of the capitalist system to prominent pro-regime songbirds publicly displayed in golden cages. Ask Barbara Kopple or Bob Woodward how it’s done.

Poitras, Greenwald et al are, we believe, decent, courageous and apparently honest bourgeois reformist journalists.  But we ask our readers to imagine how much further along in investigating, exposing and successfully fighting this impending global police state we’d be if the documents unleashed by Snowden had been placed not in the hands of “responsible journalists” but in the hands of worker-revolutionaries who weren’t so loyally censoring the documents in order to “protect the agents and assets” of the racist, bloodthirsty and greed-obsessed US capitalist class and its spy organizations!  Snowden makes clear in the movie that his motivation for placing the blockbuster documents he purloined from the NSA into the hands of trustworthy representatives of the bourgeois press was that he wanted to be sure that there would be no reckless release of information that would seriously damage the “legitimate” goals of the shadow government of the US!  Greenwald et al have scrupulously respected the “sacred trust” placed in them by Snowden to protect the “family jewels” of the espionage agencies of US and British imperialism.  This is disgusting!  Instead of placing the interests of the 7.2 billion workers of the world above all else, Snowden and his team are protecting the “legitimate rights” of the microscopically small capitalist class against those of the multi-billion strong international working class!  Snowden and his collaborators are doing a tremendous service for the US and British capitalist classes, which are, by the way, going to repay them and all of us by imposing their will on the world – both internationally and domestically – through increasingly brutal military and police-state force.  To throw the US and British capitalist classes such a huge life-preserver when they should instead be having ANCHORS tied to their necks is to betray the entire human race in order to maintain the tenuous and despotic rule of a class of criminals responsible for the perpetuation of the horrors of a capitalist world in which – to name just one major example – the world does little or nothing while 17,000 children die of starvation every single day!  There is nothing “legitimate” about the capitalist class or their “interests”!  Every effort should be made to destroy the NSA, the CIA and the US military and the cretinous ruling class that spawned them – not to save them!

Nothing short of workers revolution can change the increasingly deranged plans of the US capitalist class.  They have plans of global military domination of the entire planet that go far beyond what even Adolf Hitler envisioned; so long as their political opponents refuse to form working class revolutionary parties to overthrow the capitalist class and system, the ruling capitalists have nothing to fear.

The working class, however, DOES have something to fear from the fact that most of their erstwhile leaders are so completely dedicated to the continuation of the brutal capitalist system that they are prepared to follow the capitalist class all the way down the road to hell, where the fascists and eventually World War Three will put an end to this historical epoch – and perhaps throw the human race back into a pre-industrial stage of development.  Apparently, these folks think that they have more to gain from clinging to the coat-tails of the capitalist class than they can gain by fighting for the emancipation of the workers of the world.  If they insist on taking the capitalist road, that’s fine; but let’s not imagine that because THEY are heading down that road, that we, too, must take that well-worn path to political oblivion.  We’re not followers – we aspire to be revolutionary workers leaders. We warn the Poitrases and Greenwalds of the world of the dangers that lie ahead; we try to point out the reasons why we disagree with them; we urge them to take the high rather than the low road; but we can’t force them to lead a workers revolution.  They are simply not revolutionaries; perhaps it’s just not in their nature to be revolutionaries.  It’s a pity, but that is, in the end, their problem – we don’t need to make it ours.

The working class must look elsewhere than to Poitras, Snowden, Assange and Greenwald for the political leadership necessary to lead the workers of the world out of the dead end of the capitalist stage of development and into the next stage: that of socialism.  It’s “socialism or barbarism” brothers and sisters, just like Marx, Engels, Lenin, Luxemburg, and Trotsky explained to us so many years ago!  Now –  as then – to ignore the warnings of those great, selfless and honest internationalist leaders of the working class is to help the capitalist class pave the road leading to the hell of the next – and possibly this time, the last – world war.

Full Report of Presidential Advisory Commission for N.S.A.: “Liberty and Security in a Changing World”

Once again we have to just slam this up here without having time to read it all – all 337 pages of it!  They really laid it on thick this time.  We did read the summary and we have to say it all sounds so very clever.  Why didn’t the great lawgivers who slapped together the monstrous Patriot Act think of this?  Why did it take the courage of one man, Edward Snowden, to initiate such profound soul-searching in Washington?

The fact is that this too is a snow job.  This 337-page tome was pulled out of the ass of a group of people hand-picked by the Obama Administration not in order to destroy the NSA’s vast spy operations, but to save them.  Out of all the recommendations this blue-ribbon bunny of a commission has made, we’re absolutely sure that several of them will DEFINITELY by implemented, tout de suite: the ones outlining the tightening of security inside the “U.S. Intelligence community” in order to make sure that there will be no future possibility of another Snowdengate.  Life as an N.S.A. analyst is about to get very unpleasant if these recommendations are put into action; it’ll be much more like the working conditions that Winston Smith “enjoyed” while working for Big Brother at the Ministry of Truth.

The rest of it is all a big fancy red herring made to look like a sieve so fine that only after the NSA shape-shifts through a thousand keyhole-sized legal loopholes will they be able to get to use any of their precious telephone metadata.  In fact, there are apertures in this new legal sieve large enough for a blue whale to scoot through without his sides even touching.

We also wonder: what massive exposes remain untold as yet by Glenn Greenwald & Co. that made the rapid production and mass dissemination of this ream of lies necessary in the eyes of the reprehensible Obama regime?  Can we look forward to finding even more appalling revelations about US spy ops coming down our chimneys this holiday season and beyond?  We hope so!

We doubt if even 100 American workers outside of the Beltway will ever bother to read even the summary of this document, let alone the whole thing.  But in the interests of keeping our handful of readers as informed as possible, here it is.  Enjoy?

Get your copy of the Secret Service’s Censored Report on their Aaron Swartz Investigation

We are presenting to our readers…

aaron-swartz-usss-first-release-08-12-13

…the just-released and heavily censored U.S. Secret Service report of their “investigation” of Aaron Swartz.

Aaron Swartz, as many of you know, was the M.I.T. hacktivist who took his own life last year while under threat of  facing decades in jail for the “crime” – in the eyes of “lesser evil” Democrat Barack Obama’s Justice Dept. – of attempting to provide to the world paywall-free access to JSTOR’s scientific journals.

This series of documents has not yet been reviewed by us and so we can’t tell you much about it except to say that it is censored in that charming manner we’ve seen so often before by the guardians of the US capitalist class’ “national interest”.  In other words, they don’t want the workers of the world – and particularly the workers in the US itself –  to see how “our” secret government police and spy agencies work.

Liberals decry the “need” for secrecy in this “post-911 world”; but the capitalist classes of the world have always kept their crimes secret from the eyes of “their” working classes.  The capitalist class of the US, representing far less than 1% of the national population, own more than 50% of the national wealth.  This disturbing fact is just one of the millions of “national security secrets” that the tiny gang of bloodthirsty greedheads who actually own and operate the US Government for their own benefit must keep hidden from the American working class  – and from the workers of the world. To further that conspiracy against the working class, the US capitalist class’ Government has always sought to assert its “right” to protect its’ “national security secrets” by crushing anyone who dares to expose their “national security secrets”; from the persecution and state murders of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg to the attacks on Daniel Ellsberg and even John Lennon – to today’s assaults upon Anonymous, Jeremy Hammond, Barrett Brown, Glenn Greenwald, Mumia Abu-Jamal, Lynne StewartAssata Shakur, Julian Assange and WikiLeaks (to name but a few) – the tiny US capitalist class government, terrified of being exposed to the world as the world’s number one terrorist state – which it is! – will stop at nothing to silence those who dare to speak out against the crimes of the US capitalst class.  They have even gone so far as to assert their “right” to assassinate US citizens for writing articles in “terrorist magazines”!

Amazingly, in spite of all we know about the vast criminality of the US capitalst class – from the slave trade upon which the “great American fortunes” were amassed to Vietnam; from the genocide of the Native Americans to the torture camps at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba – WikiLeaks, Occupy Wall St. and other liberal reformist organizations dull-wittedly continue to assert that the only thing wrong with the capitalist system is that it “lacks transparency”, and that if only the inner workings of the capitalist system were made more transparent, then the world would become a much better place for us all to live in.  But nothing could be further from the truth.  The capitalist class and its state NEEDS secrecy like plants need water to survive – their battle-cry is “DEATH TO TRANSPARENCY!”  World capitalism is based on nation-states: competing economic and political units that are struggling between themselves for access to the world’s limited natural and human resources and markets.  This struggle – even in so-called “peacetime” – entails the unleashing of teams of spies and  assassins and the launching of military air, sea and land operations to “protect” the overseas investments of these endlessly warring greedheads.  The true nature of capitalist class rule – which is entirely founded on the brutal economic exploitation of all the working people around the world – MUST be kept hidden from the eyes of those very same working people.  To this end, the capitalists deploy government-run overseas and domestic disinformation campaigns (via what they cynically call the “free press”) intended to cloak their mass murder campaigns under the hypocritical cover story of “bringing democracy to the world”.  This was the fraud perpetrated upon the world by the US Government – the world’s most despotic government in history – in its war against the Iraqi workers, in which the reality of mass murder of over a million people was presented to the workers in the US by the lying US capitalist press as “freeing the Iraqis” from the clutches of the Saddam Hussein regime – a cabal that the US had helped force upon the Iraqi people for nearly half a century.  Through the capitalist class’ wholly owned US Government and news media’s international campaign of lies about Iraq, the US government was able to commit mass torture of Iraqi workers in hellhole prisons like Abu Ghraib and on US military bases around the country, all the while committing mass murder in cities and towns all over Iraq – most notoriously in Fallujah.  Only through the heroic efforts of whistleblowers like Bradley Manning did the truth come out about what was really going on in Iraq and Afghanistan.  Transparency!  To paraphrase the late, great George Carlin: “If transparency was forced upon the US government, the whole system would collapse!”

Organizations like WikiLeaks and Occupy Wall St. do not want that to happen: they want to help reform the capitalst system and make it “work” for everyone.  But that is nothing more than a naive pipe dream.  Capitalism can NEVER be made to work in the interests of the vast majority of the people on the planet – the working class, whose labor power creates the profits that the capitalist class greedily hoards to itself, systematically robbing the workers and relegating hundreds of millions of workers to abject poverty and starvation, year after year.

Unless and until the working class – internationally – unites and overthrows their “own” capitalst classes and replaces the greed-based system of capitalism with an egalitarian, democratically and rationally planned world socialist system, the antagonisms between these capitalist nation-states will grow until the entire planet is engulfed in yet another World War.  THAT is something we workers can NOT afford to allow to happen!  We must act now to build revolutionary workers parties all over the world so we can rip the weapons out of the blood-stained hands of “our” national capitalsts and seize power in the name of OUR class – the working class!  Only after this is done will the advance of human civilization be placed on a firm political and economic footing, and only then will real “transparency” in the workings of government be no longer a hindrance to, but be made an inherent, vital and welcome component of the machinery of the political and economic relationships governing the world, for the benefit of all of the human race.

Lies and Damned Lies: The US Government IS Collecting the FULL Content Every Email and Phone Call in the US and Abroad

The capitalist press of the entire world has been on a full-court press to spread the lie that the latest revelations about the US Government’s spy programs are NOT collecting every bit of information from every Internet and telephone communication made within the US and from the US to foreign countries.  The fact is that the NSA has been collecting all this information for YEARS and is, in fact, able to collect not just “metadata” – which would be bad enough – but every bit of every communication sent and received by US citizens.  This vast, police-state operation makes the East German Stasi’s unnecessary and overbearing domestic spying operation look like a joke.

The US Government, which had savagely attacked the USSR for running domestic surveillance operations against their citizens, has been shown to have been running a far more extensive spy operation in the US.  Make no mistake: you can take all the phony reassurances from the Democratic- and Republican-party scumbags who have signed off on these domestic spying operations over and over again under the pretense that they are only directed against “terrorists” – these vast spying operations are actually now – and will continue to be in the future – directed against “the usual suspects”: the workers movement inside the US and around the world.  The tiny US capitalist class, hated for its brutal repression of the workers movement all over the world, sees its number one enemy to be those workers who dare to organize unions and revolutionary parties dedicated to the overthrow of the capitalist wage-slavery system.  To further its “sole superpower” status, this microscopic minority of filthy-rich billionaires – something less than 450 individuals who own more than 50% of the wealth of the US – think that they have the right to run the entire planet.  To further their self-aggrandizing plans – which they dare to call by the names of “freedom” and “democracy”, this tiny cabal of greedheads has bribed its wholly-owned Democratic and Republican Senators and Representatives to conspire to turn the United States into a mechanism to allow the capitalist government of the US to spy on everyone on planet Earth who owns a phone.  This is, in fact the only way that such a tiny minority as the US capitalist class can hope to maintain its savage class rule over the working classes of the world, who outnumber them by billions.  This vast spying operation, whose exposure has torn the phony “human rights” mask off the US ruling class – thanks to a mere handful of courageous whistleblowers WHO MUST BE DEFENDED BY THE INTERNATIONAL WORKERS MOVEMENT BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY! – shows how scared the US capitalist class is, and how tenuous their hold on “power” is as they continue to drive the standard of living of the US working class down to the level of mere subsistence, just as Karl Marx predicted would happen in the Communist Manifesto!

This “newly-revealed” NSA spying operation has been known by those who pay attention to these things – i.e. the .001% of the US population in the various socialist workers parties and the hacker community – for several years.  In 2006 a former AT&T technician named  Mark Klein revealed the existence of a probable NSA spy operation in a mysterious locked room in an AT&T facility in San Francisco dubbed “Room 614A”.

Klein courageously exposed the fact that in this facility, a high-tech splitter had been installed on the primary fiber-optic cables carrying all the data – phone and internet – running through AT&T.  This splitter – analogous to a prism used for manipulating beams of light – was dividing the fiber optic traffic in the form of light pulses into two streams; one was being sent on its way to users of AT&T’s networks and the other was being fed into “Room 614A”.   Several experts on the NSA’s operations assumed at the time of Klein’s revelations that “Room 614A” was most likely an NSA spying operation of some kind.  Investigative reporter  Kim Zetter  wrote a series of excellent articles for Salon in which she interviewed Klein and, later, learned of the existence of other, similar operations being run at AT&T facilities around the United States.  All of this historical fact has been swept under the rug by the bourgeois press news reports of these latest revelations of the US Government’s vast domestic and international spying ops.

Last year, several news reports described the NSA’s plans to build enormous  data storage facilities around the US.  The number of these huge facilities and the number and types of supercomputers believed to be installed in them are clearly not designed merely to collect “metadata”, as the bourgeois press would have us believe.  These vast assemblies of supercomputers are designed to collect, store and analyze EVERY BIT OF DATA perused, sent and received by every citizen of this planet.  The US Government is creating an Orwellian monster designed to intercept every communication of every worker who dares to oppose the capitalist class of the US and its wholly-owned US Government.

And is this really so surprising, after all?  How else can a tiny percentage of the US population continue to lord it over 300 million American citizens and the world’s 7 billion people without creating a vast police state apparatus to monitor dissent worldwide?  They are well aware just how tenuous their hold on power is; and so they spend hundreds of billions of dollars a year on their global military and intelligence apparatus in the desperate, futile hope that through the sheer weight of their brutal military and police state operations they can somehow remain “the world’s sole superpower”!  What incredible arrogance!  And then to turn around and pose as the champions of human rights, as the US State Department does every day, including this week, when they hypocritically chastised their ally Turkey for brutalizing protesters in Istanbul!

This is why we call for workers revolution in the US to overthrow the capitalist class and their brutal system of exploitation and thievery.  The longer the working class allows this gang of thieves to run the United States as their own private plantation, the more of our brothers and sisters around the world will be murdered by the US military in defense of the foreign investments of the US capitalist class.  The chickens are coming home to roost right here in the US, where the attacks on the US workers’ standard of living are being carried out on a daily basis.  There is simply NO FUTURE for the workers of the world under capitalism – other than a future of declining standards of living and imperialist wars, leading up to the next “big one”: World War Three.  Is this the future you want to bequeath to your children and grandchildren?  It is high time that the US working class create its own workers parties to overthrow the rule of the insatiably greedy US capitalist class.  Every day we wait to do this is causing death and destruction for our sisters and brothers around the world – and sets us all here in the United States up for the same.

Exclusive Transcript: Jeremy Hammond Defense Rally, New York City, 21 February, 2013

We publish below another of our seemingly endless series of partial transcripts; this one is from today’s rally in New York City’s Foley Square in defense of alleged “Stratfor” hacker & working class hero from Chicago, Jeremy Hammond.

The rally’s turnout was pitifully small.  It is a disgrace that in New York City, a metropolis of some 8 million people, only a handful of people had the guts to actually show up to support Jeremy Hammond’s defense campaign.  Apparently, not a single so-called working class socialist political party showed up at the event!   If they were there, they sure didn’t show up on the video.  Maybe 20 people were there; almost a quarter of those present spoke; a couple others provided live video feeds of the event as well as the gathering of activists after the Chief Judge of the US District Court of Manhattan, Loretta Preska, refused to recuse herself from the case, obscenely claiming that she needed nearly two more months to decide if she has any conflicts of interest in the case that might preclude her from being an objective referee in the case!  As you may know, her own husband’s passwords and email, which he used while doing business with his law firm – which she once worked for – was among the firms whose data was disclosed in the Strafor hack!  She is obviously dragging her feet in order to ensure that Jeremy Hammond’s stay in jail – in solitary confinement, with no visitors allowed! – drags on for as long as possible.  Such is “justice” in the courtrooms of the capitalist class under the capitalist system!

The following transcript was produced by us from the series of videos produced by The Pella Report.  All errors, as usual, are our own.  Free Jeremy Hammond!  If you’d like to write to him, the address to mail (postcards only!) to Jeremy is as follows:

[First Speaker: Jason Hammond (brother of Jeremy Hammond):]

Hi, I’m Jason Hammond, Jeremy’s twin brother.  How are y’all today?  A few things I want to say about my brother’s case; and I’ll try to keep it short, because it’s cold.  And I’ll first read a statement my brother wrote to be read for this press conference:

“Thanks a lot for coming.  It means a lot to see people in court and to know people are attending rallies in front of the courthouse and the jail.  People in here always get excited to hear that the protests are in support of those on the inside.  Over time, people in prison are often forgotten by friends and family members.  It fills me with hope and joy when people show up to let me know that I’m not alone in this fight.  That’s why the work you’re all doing is so necessary.  Keep fighting!”

I personally want to thank you all for coming to support my brother.  It means just as much to me as it does to him to be able to meet and see a lot of people who would go the extra mile to show up at his court hearings.  His current situation is that he’s in solitary confinement for another fifteen days or so; and at this time he is very glad to be able to receive and send letters.  He is currently [denied a visitation for a whole year (?) (unintelligible) because we are only able to talk on the phone for very brief periods.  And I am one of his very few family members who can actually make the hike to attempt to visit him.

Jeremy is a very strong believer in the freedom of expression, the right to privacy for the individual, and in the need for government transparency.  And I also think that he is being prosecuted for his work as a political activist.

I can only hope and assume that the judge, Loretta Preska, will step down, given the fact that her husband’s email is involved in the Stratfor company itself.

I want to give an extra special thanks to those who have done solidarity work for Jeremy.  This press conference
was made possible by the time and effort put in by groups such as: The Jeremy Hammond Solidarity Network and the “FreeAnons Solidarity Network” and the “Books Through Bars” program.

That concludes the “speech” portion, and now begins the musical portion… [he carries a banjo and hands off the mic to someone and begins to play].  O.K.; this one’s called: “They Got The Wrong One”.

“They got the wrong one, It wasn’t Jeremy
They got the wrong one, let me tell you who’s guilty
I’m walking around with only half of me here,
While Sabu and the FBI are surely having a beer
When the house is made of glass, built on secrets and lies,
When people throw stones, it ain’t no suprise
Obama lied about closing down Guantanimo Bay,
He said he’d end the war, but there’s a new one every day,
Portraying Occupy as domestic terrorists,
Hell, we all wanna see the tables turned, the poor rise up, and the rich eat shit
Thats just the way it goes, when the whole world is shown
All those dirty secrets the government don’t want you to know
They got the wrong one, it wasn’t Jeremy
They got the wrong one, it wasn’t even me
Now i’m walking around with only half of me here,
Sabu and the FBI are surely having a beer
When the house is made of glass, built on secrets and lies,
When people throw stones, it ain’t no surprise”

[Song ends.  Applause]

[It’s a great song, an up-tempo, rollicking protest tune that would make Woody Guthrie smile.  Very nice.]

[Next speaker:]

Hi. I’m Heidi Boghosian , the Executive Director of the National Lawyers Guild.  The National Lawyers Guild, for seventy-five years, has been representing individuals targeted by both the government and corporations for their activism.

We call on Loretta Preska – Chief Judge of the U.S. District Court of Manhattan – to immediately recuse herself in the case of Jeremy Hammond.  As you know, the email address and password of Judge Preska’s husband, Thomas Kavaler, were
among the pieces of data released in the crime for which Hammond stands accused: hacking the private security firm Stratfor
and releasing internal emails and personal information on Stratfor’s clients. Kavaler uses the affected email address for business at the law firm Cahill, Gordon and Rydell, where he is a partner, and where Judge Preska once worked.  In addition to Kavaler’s personal information, private emails of major corporate clients to his law firm, including Merrill-Lynch, were also disclosed in the hack.

As any first-year law student knows, a judge must withdraw from hearing any case in which his or her impartiality might reasonably be questioned. The New York [Canons?] of Judicial Conduct are clear: judges must avoid not only “impropriety”, but also “the appearance of impropriety”.  The test for the “appearance of impropriety” is whether a judge’s conduct would create, “in reasonable minds” – in this case, those of New Yorkers – a perception that the judge’s ability to carry out judicial responsibilities with integrity, impartiality and competence is impaired.  No reasonable person would say that a judge, whose husband was a victim of the crime she is presiding over, could do so with integrity or impartiality, much less competence.  If Judge Preska stays on this case, it goes against everything she is sworn to do as Chief Judge; and it denigrates the very integrity of this court.  Thank you.

[Applause]

[Next speaker: Alexa O’Brien, journalist; founder, US Day of Rage]

How is everybody?

Among the number of other items in the legal record of the lawsuit of [Hedges v. Obama?] brought by several plaintiffs including myself against the “indefinite detention provision” of the National Defense Authorization Act is an email published by WikiLeaks from the Stratfor leak.  In this email, Fred Burton is consulting with Thomas Kopecky, a private security contractor who says he’s been “tasked” with trying to
tie a group that I helped found, to any Saudi or fundamentalist Islamist movements.  Because of my work as a journalist covering the US “War on Terror”, government contractors attempted to falsely link a group which I helped found – whose only purpose is to support campaign finance reform in the United States – to Al Qa’ida.  The email is cited in Judge Forrest’s ruling that the indefinite detention provision of the national Defense Authorization Act is unconstitutional.

The aims of life, the desire to learn and to understand, are now a national security threat that can and will be exploited by terrorists using the Internet, aided by social and political activists, whistleblowers, journalists and publishers who are providing you and our enemies with information.

When the notion of property applies to the genes in our body, or the ideas in our head; when entrenched, outdated, incompetent  and corrupt representatives answer questions about “how we should govern the commons” with a never-ending clash of civilizations or ideology for the natural resources, then our 18th-century philosophy, 19th-century institutions, 20th-century outlook and 21st-century problems present us with a vision that we cannot afford to bank on, build on, or believe in.

Today, Judge Loretta Preska will make her decision on a motion to recuse herself for her obvious conflict of interest in the trial of Jeremy Hammond.  She will probably not recuse herself, despite her husband appearing on a list of Stratfor’s “victims”.  She is not impartial. So, while we stand in that space, what may seem to our spirits the emotional equivalent of not being mindfucked in a bathroom rest stop en route to a wasteland called “Paradise”, I would like to remind everyone to “trust the process”.  I am not talking about the process in the courtroom behind us; I am talking about the process in the courtroom we are building right here [she stomps her right foot on the ground several times] and everywhere.

Patience.  Work.  The conflict is unavoidable; reality is ours.

[Applause]

[Next Speaker: Michael Ratner, Center for Constitutional Rights, New York]

[The video starts just after Mr. Ratner starts speaking]

… thank you, jason hammond, for being here with his brother.  I find it incredibly moving when I see Jason speaking on behalf of his brother.

I’m Michael Ratner; I’m from the Center for Constitutional Rights in New York.  We represent WikiLeaks and Julian Assange; and we’re here in part because alleged sources for WikiLeaks we want to support.   Jeremy Hammond is an alleged source of WikiLeaks of some of the most valuable documents out there on the Internet: five million Stratfor emails.

“I’m here because I support truth-tellers.  I support truth-tellers like Bradley Manning; I support truth-tellers like Jeremy Hammond and Julian Assange.  And right now we’re at a point in this government where they are hitting people with sledgehammers for telling the truth because they don’t want government and corporate corruption, hypocrisy and criminality coming out.  And just yesterday, our wonderful Attorney General announced a new policy – a tougher policy – one he said in which “we’re gonna make truth-tellers – getting them – a priority.  And the question I have is: “how much of a prioity more do they want to make it?”  They already killed Aaron Swartz; they’re… Jeremy Hammond is facing 39 years to life; Bradley Manning: life imprisonment; and Julian Assange – if they ever get him out of that embassy and into a prison here, will face the same.  So I ask the government: “what do they want to do, put ’em up against the wall and just shoot the guys?”  I mean it’s an outrageous suppression of truth, and the struggle that’s going on in this country right now is whether we’re gonna have a transparent government, and corporations that are transparent, or are we gonna continue dirty tricks, hypocrisy and secrecy?  And that’s what this case, that’s what Jeremy Hammond’s case is about.

“I’m also here because I’m seeing unroll in front of me a travesty of justice: a case in which government informants were in on the case, in which the government itself bought the computer, entrapping the people involved in the case.  I’m here because Jeremy Hammond did not get bail which he absolutely should have had; I’m here because today, as Heidi and others have said, we’re seeing a conflict of interest by the judge – as Heidi and the Guild said – she [the judge – IWP] wakes up every morning with someone whose email was hacked in the Stratfor emails.  This is a fair judge?  Not at all.

“I’m here because I stand for a transparent government, transparent corporations and privacy for all of us.  We are on the verge of a major struggle in this country, and this case is critical to how we go forward: will we have a democracy or will we continue to have a government that suppresses the truth and its own criminality?

“So again, thank you all for being here with us to support Jeremy Hammond: [raises his left fist in salute – IWP] Free Jeremy!

[Applause]

[Michael Ratner continues:]  “We all know we’re going to the courtroom after this, right?  It’s on the 12th floor?  12th floor over there at 500 Pearl Street.  All right.”

[Voice:]  “Room 12A.”

[Narrator, Mr. Pella:]  “So that concludes this portion of the press conference…”

[Unidentified woman:]  “A very quick announcement for those of you who have never been in the courtroom before?  They will make you surrender all electronics before you enter the court.  So, please: if you have your phones, lock them; they will make you give them up.  Just be aware of that; anything electronic: phones; MP3 players; doesn’t matter what it is, they will take them.”

[Narrator, Mr. Pella:]  “…Which also kind of ties in to this whole “transparent government” thing: if the government wasn’t so afraid of its own people, then why would they take their electronic possessions?  Makes you wonder, right?”

“Cowards of the Pen” Censor Dissent, Prepare World’s Couch Potatoes for WWIII Fryolator

As we have been surfing the net, we obviously often come across news articles that are just begging us to post a comment in the comments section.  The commentary is either going nowhere or there are a series of witty stupid one-liners where some intelligent discussion should appear.  So we try to encourage a broader discussion by letting people know that:

1) the capitalist regime is not “the best of all possible worlds” nor must we suffer it to continue to exist and;

2) by explaining how we workers might all get together and create societies far more egalitarian and fun for ourselves and future generations to enjoy by abolishing the capitalist system worldwide and replacing the current regime of warring capitalist nation states with peaceful, egalitarian workers republics.

The pro-capitalist media is supposed to uphold standards of openness and freedom of expression which, we are endlessly told, does not exist in “communist” countries like China, Cuba, Vietnam and North Korea.  However, in reality, the capitalist news media censors itself and the commentaries it allows to appear on their websites in order to keep the “news” and the parameters of its discussion well within limits which the bourgeoisie finds to be “acceptable”.  This is elementary knowledge for Marxists like us, and is why we speak of the press utilizing the scientific terminology developed by the Marxist movement over the past 150 years, which strips away all the thick greasepaint capitalism uses to hide its true, hideous reality.  That’s why we don’t speak of the “mainstream media” or “MSM” as the pro-capitalist liberals and right-wing anti-MSMers do: we call it out as the “capitalist press” or “bourgeois press”, because that’s what it is.  The major media outlets in capitalist countries, being owned by capitalists, are not “objective” but espouse the political, economic and social philosophy of the capitalist class itself.

That’s why even such supposedly upstanding news organizations like Reuters censor our posts when we submit them to their websites.  They would prefer that the very name of socialism or communism never be uttered on their sites, unless it is to disparage those philosophies and everyone who has ever or who does today have anything good to say about socialism.

Late last year, we submitted the following comment to a Reuters news story carried on their own website on December 12th under the title  “North Korea launches rocket, raising nuclear arms stakes” :

“Congratulations to North Korea on their successful satellite launch!  Here’s hoping that this will give the U.S. imperialists and their lackeys in Japan and Seoul reason to back down off their war provocations on the Korean peninsula.  But we doubt it.
“The billionaires’ bought-and-paid-for capitalist press pretends that the missile programs of North Korea pose a major threat to ‘world peace’ while the U.S. military operates in 173 countries and slaughters civilians from Afghanistan to Pakistan to Iraq and threatens to destroy Iran and North Korea with the US’ MASSIVE nuclear arsenal.
“The possession of nuclear weapons by small states like Iran and North Korea has been made a matter of life or death by the very real and continual nuclear blackmail being waged against these states and all the world’s nations by the ACTUAL ‘biggest threat to world peace’: the blood-soaked capitalist class of the United States, guilty of genocide of the Native Americans, the death of hundreds of thousands of Africans in the slave trade, 300 years of slavery by which the ‘great families’ of the US made their fortunes, and their bloody wars to steal northern Mexico, to seize Cuba, to murder the Philippine nationalists in the 1890s, to back up brutal military dictatorships throughout Central and South America, the napalming of ‘every village in North Korea’ during the Korean War – and other crimes too numerous to fit the space given here.  Only a workers revolution in the United States which disarms this ruthless capitalist class can begin the process by which the world can truly enjoy peace for the first time.
US/NATO: Hands off North Korea!  Workers of the World, Unite!”

We waited for an hour or so to see our comment duly posted on the Reuters site while other peoples’ comments, made long after ours, were posted, one after the other.  Irritated, but not at all surprised by this, we wrote to the Reuters editorial staff to ask if we had somehow fallen afoul of their “comments policy” and if so, what could we do to correct the situation?  They assigned us #23036 to our complaint and pretended that they would get back to us.

Here is the response from Reuters:

And, in fact, it turns out that the article we posted our comment to as well as our comment has been sent “down the memory hole”, because it is nowhere to be found on the Reuters website!

Really, what is there for them to explain?  Our comment violated several financial and ideological underpinnings of their business and their friends’ businesses, not to mention providing a searing indictment of the world’s most powerful capitalist ruling class, and so, it had to be, and was, dutifully censored by Reuters’ very own quisling employees who care more for their own job security than they do for those highly touted principles of the “free press” they were taught in the capitalists’ own journalism schools.  See how that works?

If you still don’t get it, check out the “comments policy” explanation given by Dean Wright, written back on 27 Sept. 2010 when he still worked at Reuters:

“Toward a More Thoughtful Conversation on Stories”

“Visitors to this space may recall that I wrote this summer about the issues Reuters and other news organizations face in dealing with reader comments on stories.

“I’ve become increasingly concerned about the quality of discourse in comments on news stories on Reuters.com and on other major news sites.  On some stories,  the “conversation”  has been little more than  partisans slinging invective at each other under  the cloak of anonymity.  I believe our time-challenged, professional readers want to see a more rewarding conversation—and my colleagues who lead Reuters.com are introducing a new process for comments that I believe will help bring that about.  […]  Let me introduce Richard Baum, Reuters Global Editor for Consumer Media, to tell you about the new process:

[Richard Baum continues:]

“Like many major news publishers, we’ve agonized over how to balance our enthusiasm for reader comments on stories with our belief that few people would benefit from a free-for-all. Most of our readers respect our request for comments that “advance the story,” by submitting relevant anecdotes, links and data or by challenging our reporting when they think we’ve fallen short of our editorial standards. It’s rewarding, sometimes even exhilarating, to see the way our audience builds on our coverage.

“Where we struggle is with comments that we believe contribute nothing useful to the conversation. I’m not talking about obscenities and spam — we have software that aims to block the publication of those — but something more subjective. Most of our readers are business professionals who value their time highly. [emphasis added – IWPCHI] We believe they want comments that are as rewarding to read as they are to write. The challenge is how we deliver that experience in a way that doesn’t delay the publication of good comments nor use up resources that might be better deployed on other parts of the site.

[…] Here are some examples of the type of comments that fall foul of our moderators:
– racism and other hate language that isn’t caught by our software filters
– obscene words with letters substituted to get around the software filters
– semi-literate spelling; we’re not looking for perfection, but people shouldn’t have to struggle to determine the meaning
– uncivil behavior towards other commentators; debate is welcome, schoolyard taunts are not
– incitement to violence
– comments that have nothing to do with the story
– comments that have been pasted across multiple stories
– comments that are unusually long, unless they’re very well written
– excessive use of capital letters

“Some of the guidelines for our moderators are hard to define precisely.  [You mean to say: utterly subjective? – IWPCHI] Mocking of public people can be fair sport, for example, but a moderator that has just approved 30 comments calling someone an idiot can rightly decide that there’s little incremental value in publishing the 31st. When we block comments of this nature, it’s because of issues of repetition, taste or legal risk, not political bias.

“Until recently, our moderation process involved editors going through a basket of all incoming comments, publishing the ones that met our standards and blocking the others. (It’s a binary decision: we don’t have the resources to edit comments.)

“This was unsatisfactory because it delayed the publication of good comments, especially overnight and at weekends when our staffing is lighter.

“Our new process grants a kind of VIP status on people who have had comments approved previously. When you register to comment on Reuters.com, our moderation software tags you as a new user. Your comments go through the same moderation process as before, but every time we approve a comment, you score a point.

“Once you’ve reached a certain number of points, you become a recognized user. Congratulations: your comments will be published instantly from now on. Our editors will still review your comments after they’ve been published and will remove them if they don’t meet our standards. When that happens, you’ll lose points. Lose enough points and you’ll revert to new user status.

“The highest scoring commentators will be classified as expert users, earning additional privileges that we’ll implement in future. You can see approval statistics for each reader on public profile pages like this, accessed by clicking on the name next to a comment.

“It’s not a perfect system, but we believe it’s a foundation for facilitating a civil and rewarding discussion that’s open to the widest range of people. Let me know what you think.”

Here’s what some Reuters readers “thought” about that statement:

This is a typical elitist attitude towards writing and publication. Censorship at its most foul. If we don’t like what you say then we won’t publish it. I guess the 1st ammendment is only for them.

“Most of our readers are business professionals who value their time highly. We believe they want comments that are as rewarding to read as they are to write.” Well let me ask you this: How much “time” does it take a bussiness proffessional [sic – IWPCHI] to NOT read a comment, to simply skip over it if they are not interested? As you may have gathered by the majority of comments – no one here is buying your lame excuses for censoring the comments section. The only fair thing to do is allow all comments (with the exception of spam, and profanity maybe) or do away with the comments section all together.

A VIP preference for commenting smacks of censorship. It’s one thing to eliminate comments that are not tasteful but when it’s clear the comment is civil and informed -why the delay? In the end you’ll end up loosing some of the most interesting people
who come to your site.

[End of examples – IWPCHI]

Well, of course, it’s not about providing an open discussion at all: it’s about providing an environment that their most important readers – “business professionals” – with a product that they will enjoy reading.  Everyone else can take their commentary elsewhere.  Very democratic, eh?

We had the exact same thing happen to us today on the website of “The Independent”, a major bourgeois press newspaper from London.  We wasted our time jumping through the hoops to sign up for permission to comment to a thing called “Disqus”, filed our comment and… waited all day in vain to see it posted.  (The article is entitled  “North Korea’s ‘Dear Leader’ Kim Jong-il ‘died in fit of rage over dam that had sprung a leak'”.  The discussion focused around US/NATO-sponsored “Axis of Evil” propaganda over the economic crisis and famine that took place in North Korea in the mid-to-late 1990s after the USSR collapsed and aid to NK was cut off by the repulsive, pro-capitalist Yeltsin regime.  Our comment was:

“Perhaps before you all argue over how it occurred, you should take a look at the Wikipedia article on the  “North Korean famine”. It turns out that the famine was in fact caused by the collapse of the Soviet Union – a historic betrayal of the workers of the USSR and the world by the Stalinist leadership of the USSR – as well as a series of unprecedented massive floods which combined to wipe out North Korean agriculture. On top of that, add the US/NATO countries’ sanctions and you have the North Korean regime – due to circumstances mostly far beyond its control – faced with a very dire situation leading to a tragic outcome.  No nation could pass through economic crises of that magnitude without very serious consequences resulting therefrom.

“As far as the hyperbolic statement that ‘1,000,000 people’ ‘starved to death’ due to this famine: the death toll is simply not known by anyone but the North Koreans. Wikipedia says that figures bandied about range from as few as 200,000 to 3.5 million; but no matter how many people died, the famine was an enormous tragedy for a very heroic country which has suffered tremendously at the hands of Japanese and (later) US imperialism since the 1930s, through absolutely no fault of its own. North Korea has never threatened the US in any way and it does not threaten the US or any other country today – except perhaps South Korea, which, lest we forget, it remains officially at war with.  North Korea, like any other country, has every right to defend itself against military attacks from anyone; but they have a particularly strong case for the right to defend themselves by any means necessary from attacks originating from the two nations which have repeatedly actually slaughtered millions of Korean and Chinese civilians over the past three-quarters of a century: the Japanese and the United States – and the US puppet regime in South Korea.  The US – which hypocritically pretends to mourn for every “poor North Korean” who died in the ’90s famine – ruthlessly butchered hundreds of thousands of Korean civilians, “North” and “South” during the Korean War.  Look up “The Bridge at No Gun Ri” for US soldiers first-hand accounts of how they were ordered to kill civilians in that brutal “forgotten” war.  That was just one of the many war crimes committed by the US against North Korea.  US Generals bragged about how they had napalmed every single village in North Korea from Seoul to the Chinese border, burning hundreds of thousands of civilians to death in the process.  So let’s not hear any more of this tripe about how much the “democracies” of the West care about the quality of civilian life in North Korea.

“It it a far too common practice to ‘forget’ the war crimes committed by one’s ‘own’ country, but never to hesitate to throw around the most outrageous and unfounded accusations against ‘enemy’ countries.

“Read Bruce Cumings’ excellent books ‘North Korea: Another Country’ and ‘The Korean War: A History’
for a very balanced account of recent Korean history and the massive war crimes committed by the Japanese and US against all of Korea from 1931 to the present day.

Once again, a reasoned, pro-North Korean opinion is effectively censored by the staff of “The Independent”, simply by either deleting the comment or by posting it, perhaps, hours later when the conversation has effectively ended and/or the number of comments has reached such an astronomically high number that it is pointless to even try to read them all.  Censorship accomplished!  Congratulations!  The message is: “The capitalist world is the best of all possible worlds, and there are no alternatives to it!  Obey your masters and  their laws and you will enjoy eternal joy in heaven after you are dead!”

This is why access to the Internet is so important, and why the long-running  US government assault on privacy is so important: by scaring the populace into believing that everything they say or do or read on the Internet will be reviewable at any time by the police agents of the capitalist class and will be used against the workers, the US government hopes that it can scare people away from websites like this one – or at least keep them from having the courage to “like” or comment on these types of sites.

And it works, too, doesn’t it?  It apparently works on most of you who read this blog!  Our website has had several thousand visitors since we established it last spring – and we have a grand total of 34 comments in eight months!

Your ability to speak and think freely is being taken away from you; or, rather, you, by refusing to demand your rights and by refusing to exercise those you do still have, are wantonly abandoning your rights to the capitalist wolves who wish to turn you into an obedient debt peon, because it’s easier to give up your rights than it is to defend them.    And you have no right to surrender these rights without a fight, because your ancestors fought and died for them… and if you won’t defend your rights starting RIGHT NOW, your children and grandchildren will have to fight and die to regain those rights you so slavishly surrender today.   There is no way for you to avoid responsibility for this, sisters and brothers.  If you continue to sit on the sidelines of this battle, watching people like the  Anarchist youth that were sent to jail last year for standing up for YOUR rights get railroaded; if you will sit there like a couch potato and watch WikiLeaks get destroyed by the capitalist state that wants to keep its many crimes hidden from your view;  if you will sit there like a good little consumer and watch Bradley Manning get tortured and then jailed for decades for daring to tell YOU the TRUTH about the US capitalists’ wars in Iraq and Afghanistan; if you will go to work like a good little wage slave every day and keep your head down and ignore what’s happening to your fellow Chicagoan, Jeremy Hammond, facing decades in jail for the “crime” of exposing how private companies are making billions of dollars by undermining workers organizations fighting for YOUR rights – the number of cases like these have been steadily rising while you’ve been evading your responsibilities, “brothers and sisters”! –  then most assuredly your children and grandchildren will be forced to fight for their lives against a US police state so monstrous it would make George Orwell gasp for air.  And when your children and grandchildren trace back the origins of that police state to YOU and your MULISH INDIFFERENCE to the massive human suffering that took place while your generation was in power… well let’s just say that whenever the subject comes up they will express their tremendous contempt of their cowardly ancestors who bequeathed them such a world and such a monumental struggle and leave it at that.

The time during which this dystopian future can be not just avoided but turned around and a world worthy of bringing children into can be created to replace it is running out quickly.  You’d better get your ass of those couches, potatoes, before they all catch fire under your sorry asses and you become just a few  hundred million burnt french fries in the WWIII Fryolator – which is exactly where we are ALL headed if we workers don’t get off our asses and GET BUSY ORGANIZING OURSELVES to overthrow the capitalist system!

Clicking on the “Like” button is not enough!  Retweeting a post from a revolutionary workers’ website is not enough!  Honking the horn on your mobile couch in impotent faux “solidarity” as you and a car full of your potato-friends zip past a demonstration of worker-activists is NOT ENOUGH!  You must commit yourselves, your lives and your money to this goal of a more just egalitarian society for yourselves and your children or IT WILL NOT COME TO PASS!  Get involved, NOW!

US, UK Governments: Hands Off Julian Assange and WikiLeaks!

There have been new developments today in the case of Julian Assange, founder of the whistle-blower group WikiLeaks.

The government of Ecuador has granted Assange – who is now living in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London – asylum and permission to move to Ecuador, where he will be free to continue to fight extradition charges to Sweden that might end up placing him in the hands of the US government.   Members of the US Government – Republicans and Democrats – have branded Assange and his supporters everything from “terrorists” to “a clear and present danger to America” who should be prosecuted under the draconian Espionage Act of 1917 , which has been used to imprison US activists and politicians who opposed the military draft during wartime.  One of the act’s first victims was Eugene Debs, one of the founders of the International Workers of the World (IWW) , who had broken the law by making a speech in Canton, Ohio in 1918 in which he “urg[ed] resistance to the military draft.  This was not a crime, but an act of heroic defense of the interests of the working class internationally; nevertheless, the US government obtained a conviction and sentenced him to 10 years in prison, 5 of which he served.   So much for the US’ vaunted Bill of Rights and “Freedom of Speech”!  When push comes to shove, the Bill of Rights isn’t worth the paper it’s printed on, especially when the US capitalist class has war profiteering on its mind!  In wartime especially – and remember, the “War on Terror” is a war that will never end – the “Bill of Rights” gets run through a shredder and wall-to-wall censorship becomes the order of the day.

The Obama administration has unleashed the Justice Dept. bloodhounds to track down whistleblowers at all costs in order to keep the worlds largest closet full of skeletons locked up tight. The Democrats – who like to call themselves the “friends of labor” – thus expose themselves once again to the entire world as being actually among the greatest enemies of labor, not just in the US but internationally!

Assange is in an extremely difficult position, as he has been facetiously indicted by Swedish authorities with various sex crimes under circumstances that clearly indicate that the charges are being made as part of a concerted effort to crush Wikileaks by imprisoning its founder on false charges.    He was in the UK fighting his extradition to Sweden on multiple grounds and due to the strong belief  – shared by many human rights lawyers – that the Swedish charges are simply a pretext to bring Assange to Sweden, at which time Sweden will turn him over to US authorities, who wish to prosecute Assange – an Australian national – under US espionage laws.  The US government has been howling for Assange’s blood for years, furious at him and his organization for repeatedly exposing US corporate crimes as well as US military war crimes in Iraq and Afghanistan.   Wikileaks’ release of over 250,000 secret emails from the US State Department as well as their publication of the leaked Afghan and Iraq War Logs, the distribution via Internet of a US Defense Department video of a US helicopter crew slaughtering civilians in Iraq, all aroused US government hatred and the allegation that the documents and video were “stolen” by former US Army intelligence operative Bradley Manning (who is now being held by the US military under conditions that amount to torture) and handed over to Wikileaks, in violation of US law.

As representatives of the working class of the world, we see these cases differently: “stealing” secret US government documents – which are kept secret only in order to hide the true nature of the hypocrisy and savagery of the US government from the working class of the United States – and publicly exposing them to the light of day is a tremendous service to the working class internationally and especially in the US.  We do not see this as a crime, we see it as a heroic act of solidarity with the working class against the bloodthirsty US capitalist class and their bought-and-paid-for government.  The phoniness of the US’ sham “democracy” is nowhere better illustrated than in the texts of the State Department cables, where candid “secret” US government assessments of the US governments “allies” around the globe are exposed as showing the vast gulf that exists between the US’ government’s public statements and what the denizens of “Foggy Bottom” really think.  Exposing the duplicity of US “diplomats” who hide the bloody designs of the US ruling capitalist class behind velvety phrases created to blind the workers of the world to the true nature of US imperialism is a revolutionary act of heroism that might save the lives of millions of workers caught in the cross-hairs of – or economically drafted directly into the service of – the US war machine!

Likewise, WikiLeaks’ acquisition and public display of the US war crimes video dubbed “Collateral Murder” tears the mask off the State Department’s obscene claim that the United States’ military invasion and occupation of Iraq is intended to bring “democracy” to the people of Iraq.  This video clearly shows the typical depravity of US soldiers after years of brainwashing by the US Military into believing that all Iraqis are “the enemy” and can be slaughtered with impunity.  It shows how just a few years in the US military can turn a nice 18 year old youth into a murderous thug who kills men, women and children as if they were just animated figures in a video game.

The Independent Workers Party calls on the workers of the world to defend WikiLeaks, Julian Assange, Bradley Manning and all the brave people who seek to expose the vast and sordid history of US War Crimes and the US capitalist class’ systematic robbery and mass murder of workers all over the world.  Protests should immediately be called to march to the UK’s embassies wherever they exist and to make clear the outrage the workers of the world feel at seeing the UK government’s brutal attacks on Mr. Assange and their flagrant flouting of international law by outrageously stating their intent to storm the Ecuadorian Embassy in London in order to seize Mr. Assange and deport him to Sweden.

This entire case shows how far the supposedly hallowed “rights” of “freedom of speech” actually protect a citizen of a capitalist country like England or the US.   Human rights in bourgeois democracies like these only exist so long as the people exercising their rights do not come into direct conflict with the basic functioning of the capitalist system.  The moment a worker goes out on strike or starts to oppose military recruitment – or even tries to tell the truth about what is being done secretly by a capitalist government in the name of the citizens of that nation – it’s “goodbye “Bill of Rights”, hello jail!” – or worse.

This is why we must organize a working class party here in the US to create a coherent movement that fights against every attempt by the capitalist class to revoke even the smallest shred of the Bill of Rights.  The attempt by successive US governments – led by Republicans and Democrats – to gag whistleblowers who heroically fight to get the truth out to the world about what horrible crimes are being committed by US corporations and the US government must be fought by the working class of the US with all our might.  Today they attack Julian Assange and Bradley Manning and their supporters – tomorrow they will come after you, and your friends and your supporters!  Your unions!  Your political organizations!  This might look to you, today, to be “someone else’s fight”; but if you allow yourselves to be fooled into believing that, you can be assured that tomorrow, it will be YOUR ASS that will be in the sling!

Workers of the World, Unite!  UK, US Government hands off Julian Assange and WikiLeaks!  Free Bradley Manning!
