9 August 2016: 71st Anniversary of US War Crime in Nagasaki

The images of the US war crimes of Hiroshima and Nagasaki usually focus on everything except the most important thing: the horrific effects of the nuclear bomb on human beings.  We see pictures of the bomb being built, the smiling fools proudly handling nuclear material that is so radioactive it is killing them while they pose for photos; the planes used, the happy crews of the planes… everything but the actual victims of the bombs.  These photos are graphic depictions of the horror of nuclear war in human terms.  This is what the human race will suffer through if we do not overthrow the capitalist system worldwide before the capitalist classes of the world go at it once again in their unending mad quest for profits.  World War Three does not have to happen: it is up to the workers of the world to prevent it from happening.  We have a choice between building an egalitarian socialist world or of sticking with a capitalist system that has already plunged the planet into two world wars.  The fate of the entire human race depends on what this generation of the 21st century decides to do.

6 August 2016: 71st Anniversary of U.S. War Crime – the A-Bombing of Hiroshima, Japan

To commemorate the 71st anniversary of the US war crime of the dropping of the atomic bomb on the city of Hiroshima, Japan, we present excerpts from the book “Hiroshima Diary” by Dr. Michihiko Hachiya.  On August 6, 1945 Dr. Hachiya was the Director of the Hiroshima Communications Hospital, one of the few facilities that was not completely leveled by the nuclear blast.  At home at the time of the explosion, not far from ground zero, Dr. Hachiya was severely injured.  Unable to work in the days after the attack, he began to keep a diary of the events taking place around him.  These excerpts are personal accounts of witnesses in Hiroshima on August 6th and 7th – eyewitnesses to the immense human toll of the bombing , which we do not see in many photographs.  Photographs of the thousands of dead taken immediately after the blast are kept hidden from the public, though they do exist.  Immediately after the end of WWII, the US Government began a massive propaganda campaign in an attempt to get US citizens comfortable with the idea of surviving as victors in a nuclear war with the USSR and China.  Graphic images of what happens to human beings in a nuclear war were not allowed to be shown; instead, children were taught to “duck and cover” under their flimsy school desks when they saw the flash from a nuclear bomb.  At home, people were encouraged to build air raid shelters and bomb-proof bunkers under their homes, and to keep them stocked with canned goods and water so they could survive the immediate effects of the A-bomb.  But the oral and written histories of Hiroshima and Nagasaki tell a different story: one of unimaginable horror and human suffering that was inescapable for almost everyone within 5 miles of the center of the explosion.  Today’s nuclear weapons are many times more powerful than the bombs dropped on Japan; so these eyewitness accounts give us only a hint of what would happen in a modern nuclear war.  As the capitalist world hurtles toward World War III we offer this brief look at what lies in store for all of us unless we the workers put an end to the capitalist system of exploitation, poverty and war and establish a global coalition of egalitarian socialist workers republics in its place.

The US Government, which launched wars in Korea that killed 3 million, Vietnam (another 3 million); backed dictatorships throughout South and Central America and the Caribbean that slaughtered hundreds of thousands of workers and trade union leaders; organized the slaughter of hundreds of thousands of workers in the Philippines and Indonesia; and has killed over 1 million in Iraq and hundreds of thousands in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Libya and Syria tries to sell the big lie that ISIL/ISIS are ruthless killers!  The most ruthless mass-murderers on this planet – the US capitalist class and their blood-soaked government – slaughtered more workers in two days in August 1945 than ISIL/ISIS – vicious as they certainly are – has killed in the past two years!  And more often than not, the US political party in power that ends up happily leading workers into a slaughterhouse at the behest of their corporate owners is… the “lesser evil” Democratic Party!

U.S. capitalism must die so the working classes of the U.S. and the world may live!  Workers of the world, unite!

Don’t go,” I said. “Please tell us more of what occurred yesterday.”

It was a horrible sight,” said Dr. Tabuchi. “Hundreds of injured people who were trying to escape the hills passed our house. The sight of them was almost unbearable. Their faces and hands were burnt and swollen; and great sheets of skin had peeled away from their tissues to hang down like rags on a scarecrow. They moved like a line of ants. All through the night, they went past our house, but this morning they had stopped. I found them lying on both sides of the road so thick that it was impossible to pass without stepping on them.”

I lay with my eyes shut while Dr. Tabuchi was talking, picturing in my mind the horror he was describing. I neither saw nor heard Mr. Katsutani when he came in. It was not until I heard someone sobbing that my attention was attracted, and I recognized my old friend. I had known Mr. Katsutani for many years and knew him to be an emotional person, but even so, to see him break down made tears come to my eyes. He had come all the way from Jigozen to look for me, and now that he had found me, emotion overcame him.

He turned to Dr. Sasada and said brokenly: “Yesterday, it was impossible to enter Hiroshima, else I would have come. Even today fires are still burning in some places. You should see how the city has changed. When I reached the Misasa Bridge this morning, everything before me was gone, even the castle. These buildings here are the only ones left anywhere around.

Mr. Katsutani paused for a moment to catch his breath and went on: “I really walked along the railroad tracks to get here, but even they were littered with electric wires and broken railway cars, and the dead and wounded lay everywhere. When I reached the bridge, I saw a dreadful thing. It was unbelievable. There was a man, stone dead, sitting on his bicycle as it leaned against the bridge railing. It is hard to believe that such a thing could happen!”

He repeated himself two or three times as if to convince himself that what he said was true and then continued: “It seems that most of the dead people were either on the bridge or beneath it. You could tell that many had gone down to the river to get a drink of water and had died where they lay. I saw a few live people still in the water, knocking against the dead as they floated down the river. There must have been hundreds and thousands who fled to the river to escape the fire and then drowned.

The sight of the soldiers, though, was more dreadful than the dead people floating down the river. I came onto I don’t know how many, burned from the hips up; and where the skin had peeled, their flesh was wet and mushy. They must have been wearing their military caps because the black hair on top of their heads was not burned. It made them look like they were wearing black lacquer bowls.

And they had no faces! Their eyes, noses and mouths had been burned away, and it looked like their ears had melted off. It was hard to tell front from back. One soldier, whose features had been destroyed and was left with his white teeth sticking out, asked me for some water, but I didn’t have any. I clasped my hands and prayed for him. He didn’t say anything more. His plea for water must have been his last words. The way they were burned, I wonder if they didn’t have their coats off when the bomb exploded.”

[…]

Somebody asked him what he was doing when the explosion occurred. […]

I was the ranking officer in the local branch of the Ex-officer’s Association, but even I didn’t know what to do because that day the villagers under my command had been sent off to Miyajima [the next village towards Hiroshima from where he was in Jigozen, approximately 10 miles southwest of ground zero – IWPCHI] for labor service. I looked all around to find someone to help me make a rescue squad, but I couldn’t find anybody. While I was still looking for help, wounded people began to stream into the village. I asked them what had happened, but all they could tell me was that Hiroshima had been destroyed and everybody was leaving the city. With that I got on my bicycle and rode as fast as I could towards Itsukaichi. By the time I got there, the road was jammed with people, and so was every path and byway.

Again I tried to find out what had happened, but nobody could give me a clear answer. When I asked people where they had come from, they would point towards Hiroshima and say. ‘This way.’ And when I asked where they were going, they would point toward Miyajima and say, ‘That way.’ Everybody said the same thing.

I saw no badly wounded or burned people around Itsukaichi, but when I reached Kusatsu, nearly everybody was badly hurt. The nearer I got to Hiroshima the more I saw until by the time I had reached Koi [a railroad station on the very western limits of the city] they were all so badly injured, I could not bear to look into their faces. They smelled like burning hair.

The area around Koi station was not burned, but the station and the houses nearby were badly damaged. Every square inch of the station platform was packed with wounded people. Some were standing; others lying down. They were all pleading for water. Now and then you could hear a child calling for its mother. It was a living hell, I tell you! It was a living hell!

Today it was the same way. […] I left Koi station and went over to the Koi primary school. By then, the school had been turned into an emergency hospital and was already crowded with desperately injured people. Even the playground was packed with the dead and dying. They looked like so many cod fish spread out for drying. What a pitiful sight it was to see them lying there in the hot sun. Even I could tell they were all going to die.”

[…]

Dr. Hanaoka made an appearance. “Let me tell you, if I can, what happened,” he said. “I stopped by the Red Cross Hospital on my way here. It is swamped with patients, and outside the dead and dying are lined up on either side of the street as far east as the Miyuki Bridge.

Between the Red Cross Hospital and the center of the city I saw nothing that wasn’t burned to a crisp. Streetcars were standing at Kawaya-cho and inside were dozens of bodies, blackened beyond recognition. I saw fire reservoirs filled to the brim with dead people who looked as though they had been boiled alive. In one reservoir I saw a man, horribly burned, crouching beside another man who was dead. He was drinking blood-stained water out of the reservoir. Even if I had tried to stop him, it wouldn’t have done any good; he was completely out of his head. In one reservoir there were so many dead people there wasn’t enough room for them to fall over. They must have died sitting in the water.

Even the swimming pool at the Prefectural First Middle School is filled with dead people. They must have suffocated while they sat in the water trying to escape the fire because they didn’t appear to be burned.

Dr. Hanaoka cleared his throat, and after a moment continued: “Dr. Hachiya, that pool wasn’t big enough to accommodate everybody who tried to get in it. You could tell that by looking around the sides. I don’t know how many were caught by death with their heads hanging over the edge. In one pool I saw some people who were still alive, sitting in the water with dead all around them. They were too weak to get out. People were trying to help them, but I am sure they must have died. I apologize for telling you these things, but they are true. I don’t see how anyone got out alive…”

STATEMENT FOR: PUBLIC RELEASE

SUBJECT: @XYCHELSEA TWITTER ACCOUNT

Everyone,

I want to thank all of those of you who are now
following my new Twitter account. It was pretty amazing
to get so many followers so quickly! It’s only possible
because of you all, out there, who care about the
things and people that I do.

I wanted to set up this account awhile ago, but
I didn’t really have the time or energy to until I
began to start taking hormones a few months ago. So a few
weeks ago I asked my friend Trevor Fitzgibbon if he would
set up an account that I reserved in 2013, and he
agreed to help for no cost.

This is a temporary arrangement until I can find
a way to either access my account more easily, or find
someone else willing to put in the labor of managing
the account, like Courage to Resist or another volunteer.

The tweets, except for retweets, are verbatim dictated
over the phone to someone that I can call from here in Kansas.

US, NATO, UN: Hands off North Korea! US Military Provocation, Propaganda Barrage Continues as China Stabs N. Korea in Back

The massive war propaganda operation being run by the United States capitalist class and its imperialist allies’ news media operations against the heroic nation of North Korea continues unabated today.   The capitalist press lying “coverage” of the North Korea story is so heavily self-censored that it is quite amazing even for those of us who have seen this type of operation many times before.  Just Google “North Korea Threatens Nuclear Strike” and see how far a lie can go while the truth is just putting on its boots!

The full focus of the massive, internationally coordinated campaign of lies and slanders against the North Korean workers state is that the North Koreans have been made to be so “irrational” at the threat of new sanctions that the North Korean government has threatened to attack the US mainland with nuclear bombs – something that everyone who knows anything at all about the North Korean military knows is not even possible.  North Korea does not, in fact, possess missiles capable of carrying nuclear bombs to the US mainland – or even Hawaii! Every military analyst on the planet knows this, but still the US capitalist press spreads this Goebbels-esque lie.

The fact is that, although they are justifiably angry that their nation is being “punished” by the US imperialists’ puppets and allies at the UN like a naughty child for the “crime” of attempting to defend its own borders,  the principal source for the North Koreans’ anger is actually yet another vicious military provocation and imminent threat against North Korea – the massive  joint US/South Korean military war “games” most charmingly and patronizingly named “Operation Foal Eagle”.   The very existence of this weeks-long series of military exercises seemingly designed to provoke North Korea into an attack against US and South Korean military forces operating within 50 miles of its coastline has been almost completely expunged from the capitalist press.  Hardly a word has been written about “Foal Eagle”, in which a huge armada of naval, air and land forces – including over 10,000 U.S. soldiers – and the entire South Korean military are engaged in “mock attacks” on North Korea, “exercises” in which US and South Korean Air Forces practice “fake” bombing runs aimed at key North Korean military and political targets.  If the North Koreans had the capability of carrying out “war games” like this just outside Chesapeake Bay, the US would go FUCKING APESHIT!  But it’s OK when the big, cowardly, bully US government threatens yet another tiny little country that dares to stand up to US imperialism!  In fact, it’s so “OK” with the lying US capitalist press that they pretend it’s not even happening!

In yesterday’s newspapers, the main thrust of imperialist propaganda was the passage in the UN – with the criminal assistance of the fake-“communist” government of China – of a new regime of sanctions against North Korea, intended to tighten the noose around the throats of the working people of that long-suffering, tiny workers state.  The United States government, unable to defeat North Korea militarily during the Korean War – in spite of unleashing massive chemical warfare and bombing campaigns against the civilian population – and unable to buy the leaders of North Korea outright, seeks to strangle this tiny country to death economically.  North Korea – the 99th largest country in the world, a country of 120,000 square kilometers (roughly the size of Pennsylvania) is portrayed by the lying capitalist press as a crazed, nuclear-armed Goliath “threatening” the “peaceful” US – the 3rd largest country in the world, possessing a huge nuclear arsenal – with nuclear annihilation – for no reason at all besides the “fact” that the North Koreans are “deranged”.   The astonishing ability of the world’s capitalist press to successfully spread this “big lie” campaign is testimony to the credulity and the poor education of the working class around the world, but particularly in the United States itself.

The US working class has been bludgeoned into a state of near-complete apathy by the constant lies of the politicians of the twin capitalist parties in the US, as well as the massive destruction of the standard of living of the workers since the latest collapse of US capitalism in 2008.  Poorly educated and subject to constant nationalist propaganda proclaiming that the capitalist system of the US has produced the highest standard of living and most thriving democracy in the world when neither “fact” is even remotely close to the truth, the working class staggers blindly forward, convinced that “there’s nothing we can do” about a government that almost no one in the country actually supports.  Only about 30% of the adults eligible to vote actually bother to do so, certain as they are that it doesn’t matter which party they vote for, they’ll be screwed either way.  While this is certainly the truth as regards the twin political pillars of the US capitalist system, it does not absolve the US working class of the responsibility of taking matters into our own hands and changing the situation for the better.  No one else can do it but us, the US working class – we are responsible for our own destinies.   To sit around as if we – 300,000,000 of us in – potentially – the most powerful working class on the face of the planet – are helpless children at the mercy of the 500 capitalists – 500! – who own 50% of the nation’s wealth is to act, not like proud workers but as abject slaves, broken in spirit and sullenly slouching off to work every day like the good little debt-peons the capitalist class wants us to be!

Meanwhile, the workers of the world look at the US and wonder why such relatively privileged working people stand around like idiots doing nothing to stop “their own” government that goes around the world crushing tiny country after tiny country, murdering men, women and children from Afghanistan to Iraq, Libya to Mali, South America to the Philippines and threatening to erase Iran and North Korea from the face of the Earth for “daring” to stand up to the United States!  Wake up, brothers and sisters!  “Your” government is poised, right now as you read this to commit one of the most heinous war crimes in the history of the world: the nuclear annihilation of tiny North Korea!  We have to stop this from happening!  The North Korean workers have NEVER threatened and do not now threaten the working class of the United States in ANY WAY.  But the continued existence of North Korea – a Stalinist workers state that overthrew capitalism in the 1950s and continues to defend their socialist country in defiance of the US capitalist class – ENRAGES the US capitalist class, which can’t bribe, steal or militarily smash this courageous little country unless they can somehow provoke North Korea into a desperate defensive attack on the US military juggernaut that is poised at this very hour to invade North Korea and crush that country into submission for the “crime” of trying to build socialism in one little country!

As you read this, the United States has 11,000 soldiers and complete land, sea and air forces conducting threatening military maneuvers – mock attacks – against North Korea!  It is as if the Russians and Chinese were holding joint military exercises in Chesapeake Bay “practicing” bombing runs on Washington D.C.!  THIS is what the North Koreans are pissed off about; THIS is why one of their military leaders went “off-message” and threatened to bomb the United States!  It’s because the long-suffering North Koreans are sick and tired of being threatened with annihilation by the most powerful military power in the world – the United States!  If the United States government truly believes that the North Koreans are “crazy enough” to attempt to attack the US with the handful of nukes they possess – which would mean risking the complete destruction of North Korea in a US nuclear counter-strike – WHY is the US capitalist class engaged in such provocative war moves right off the coast of North Korea?  Are they trying to get the North Koreans to panic and attack the US forces, thus “justifying” a US counter-attack?  Is this another secret war plan like the US plans to enter WWII only after provoking Japan to attack Pearl Harbor, or the phony pretext for the massive attack on Vietnam, the “Gulf of Tonkin incident”?

THE ANSWER IS: YES!!  The US capitalist class wants revenge for the humiliating military defeat the North Koreans handed them in the Korean War.  They want to wipe off the face of the Earth any government that dares to stand up to the US, from Cuba to Libya to Iraq to Vietnam to China to North Korea!  They will murder as many people as they feel they “have to” in order to maintain the position of the US capitalist class as the dominant economic power in the world – a dominance which is ONLY made possible by the existence of the huge US war machine, as the US economy has been looted to the point where the US is by far the world’s greatest debtor nation – a beggar armed to the teeth and threatening to destroy the planet in order to keep that hideous gang of thieves – the US capitalist class – “on top” of the world!

The United States is a BROKE-ASS-BROKE, has-been capitalist country that manufactures nothing worth a damn except weapons with which to continually threaten their rival capitalists with.  The standard of living for workers in the US – in case you haven’t noticed, brother and sister WAGE-SLAVES! – has been steadily declining since the 1960s.  Last year real wages in the US declined – according to lying  “official” figures – by 0.4%!   Millions of US workers are unemployed; 1/5 of US children live “at or below” the poverty level; college graduates, saddled with massive debts, can’t find jobs; millions of workers are working part-time in jobs they are vastly overqualified for just desperately trying to make ends meet; millions of families have been thrown out of their homes and apartments as the lost their jobs during the last recession… and you are being told by the government that THIS IS THE BEST OF ALL POSSIBLE WORLDS!  Do you believe this?

And now, “your” sick government, a bought-and-paid-for, wholly owned subsidiary of the US capitalist class – which makes up less that 5% of the US population – wants YOU to sit there like stupid assholes while they smash the shit out of tiny North Korea, and then maybe move on to Iran and do the same thing, so that capitalist class can move their army just this/much closer to the border of China – the real target of US imperialism, against whom they wish to wage World War Three!  Will you sit there pretending that there is “nothing you can do” like you did when the FBI murdered the women and children at Waco, Texas?  Will you sit there like the stupid slaves they want you to be while they lie to crush millions of your fellow workers, like they did in Iraq and Afghanistan, Vietnam and El Salvador, Guatemala and the Philippines, Indonesia and Chile and Panama and Libya?

The Associated Press published an article on the North Korean situation yesterday that was probably 5,000 words long that did not even mention ONE TIME the fact that the US and South Korea are at this very minute holding very provocative war “games” using live ammunition and planes and submarines with very real bombs and missiles just off the coast of North Korea!  They are “practicing” amphibious landings and live nuclear attacks using B-52 and Stealth bombers “pretending” to take runs at the capital of North Korea, Pyongyang, and then turning away at the last minute!  Is it any wonder that the North Koreans are so goddamned pissed off?

This isn’t the first time that the US has carried out such naked military provocations against North Korea: they have been doing it every year since the signing of the “Armistice” between North and South Korea in 1953!  If anything has been proven beyond a doubt by this, it is the fact that the US government is a deranged, warmongering country and the North Koreans are incredibly stable and capable of tolerating incredible pressure in such situations!  How do they keep from defending themselves in these situations?  What would the US do if China was holding such a military exercise in international waters 200 miles off the coast of Virginia’s Chesapeake Bay, within minutes of striking distance from Washington D.C.??

China’s role in this international conspiracy of capitalist states to crush North Korea is especially disgusting.  The Chinese Maoist bureaucracy is so far gone down the road to the restoration of capitalism in China that it is quite repulsive to behold.  These scum, whose own fathers, mothers grandfathers and grandmothers fought like heroes to free China from the grip of landlordism and savage, racist exploitation at the hands of international capitalism are now selling out the millions of heroic Chinese workers who gave their lives in the Chinese Revolution – for cash.  Chinese Stalinism/Maoism is in its death throes, having decided, like their counterparts in the USSR, that it’s better to just stuff their pockets with cash and loot the collectivised economy rather than defend the revolution.  They are selling the graves of their ancestors for a few pieces of silver.  The Chinese fake-“communist” government needs to be overthrown by the Chinese working class in a political revolution that defends socialism and kicks the capitalists out of China for ever!

The North Koreans fought heroically, side-by-side with their Chinese brothers and sisters during the Chinese Revolution.  In fact, it is quite possible that there would never have BEEN a successful Chinese Revolution if not for the efforts of at least 100,000 Korean Communists who were forced to flee to China when the Japanese invaded Korea and hunted down the communist workers like dogs.  The Korean worker-communists became the leading cadres of the Chinese Revolution in eastern Chinese cities and along the Korean-Chinese border.  Thousands of Koreans gave their lives fighting on the side of the Chinese workers in a real internationalist effort to overthrow the Japanese imperialist yoke that attempted to drown the Chinese workers movement in blood.  And now these disgusting nouveau-riche Chinese “communist party” scum repay the Korean workers by stabbing them in the back at the UN, voting to extend the sanctions regime pushed by blood-soaked US imperialism against the North Korean workers!  The depravity of the leadership of the Chinese “Communist Party” apparently knows no bounds – greed has completely infected their minds to such an extent that they literally sell their erstwhile North Korean comrades to the capitalist hangmen for bags full of US dollars!   Here’s hoping that the mighty Chinese working class gives these criminals in the Communist Party of China what they deserve: long prison sentences for betraying the Chinese working class and selling out the Revolution to world capitalism!  For workers political revolution in China!  Defend socialism and throw the foreign capitalists and their “communist party” puppets into the China Sea!

DEFEND NORTH KOREA! Oppose US, S. Korean War Provocation “Operation Foal Eagle”

The massive propaganda barrage of the capitalist world’s press against the tiny workers state of North Korea is an excellent example of the effectiveness of US propaganda efforts, which have made the world’s military superpower – run by a cabal of crazed Wall St. sock puppets – into a “David” being threatened by the North Korean “Goliath”.  You seriously have to be completely unaware of the relative strengths of these two nation-states in order to swallow the whale-sized portions of lies being spread by Washington about the imaginary threat posed by North Korea’s possession of – at most – a handful of medium-range nuclear missiles.

The main thrust of the US propaganda barrage against the North Korean workers state (capitalism was overthrown there in 1950) is that the North Korean leaders are “crazy” and are starving their people to death in order to be able to afford to build nuclear weapons as a means of making the North Korean leadership look powerful to the masses.  As if building a nuclear arsenal was just a sort of luxury item constructed for the benefit of the North Korean leader, Kim Jong Un – like an American billionaire might buy a Picasso for $150 million to show how rich he is.

Get ready for a reality check.

As we write this, the United States and South Korea are engaged in yet another of their decades-long series of threatening war provocations against North Korea, called – most patronizingly – “Operation Foal Eagle”...  This is a massive joint military exercise held just off the North Korean coast that places an enormous military invasion force within minutes of the critical military and civilian infrastructure of the North.  Pyongyang (the capital of North Korea) has every reason to be building a nuclear arsenal to protect itself from these imminent military threats constantly being brandished in their faces by the biggest bully regime in the world – the United States.

“Foal Eagle is a series of 20 separate but inter-related joint and combined field training exercises conducted by Combined Forces Command and U.S. Forces Korea components spanning ground, air, naval, expeditionary, and special operations.  The exercises include both US and ROK forces and they are the culmination of many months of planning.

“Approximately 10,000 U.S forces along with ROK military personnel will participate in Exercise Foal Eagle.  The majority of the U.S. participants are coming from outside the ROK.  The exercises are designed to enhance the security and readiness of the Republic of Korea and are deterrent in nature.

“The United Nations Command Military Armistice Commission informed the Korean People’s Army through its Panmunjom Mission of the exercise dates and the non-provocative nature of this training.

So, we guess that if, say, the Russians were conducting a joint military exercise with China near, say, the Aleutian Islands, and were performing land, sea and air maneuvers 50 miles from the Alaskan coast, there’d be absolutely no reason for the US government to be alarmed, right?  Nah.  The North Koreans are crazy for thinking that the US would attack them.  Why would the US do that?

They already did that, in 1950.  In an effort to “stop the spread of communism” the US invaded Korea (there was no “South Korea” then, nor a “North Korea”, just “Korea”) set up a puppet government headed by a moral pygmy, Syngman Rhee, who was then living in fucking COLORADO, collected gangs of Koreans (who had been collaborators with the hated Japanese colonial government that brutally raped Korea and China from the 1930s until the end of WWII) to work as Rhee’s underlings and created an anticommunist “South Korea” to crush the North.  The “North Koreans” had an army that had been tempered in some of the most savage counterinsurgency warfare in history, fighting the Japanese for decades under the leadership of Kim Jong Il, the great Korean revolutionary leader and military strategist.  These heroic battle-hardened forces very nearly swept Rhee’s collection of war criminals into the sea.  And that would have been the end of hostilities in Korea… but the big bully US saw an opportunity to score what they thought would be an “easy win” against communism, and insanely backed the hated Rhee puppet government to the hilt.  The Korean peninsula, as the US press release notes, is still at war today thanks to billions in US aid to South Korea.

The Korean War was one of the most savage wars in modern history.  The United States Air Force generals bragged that they napalmed every village from the what is now the demilitarized zone in Korea to the Chinese border.  Hundreds of thousands of peasants – men, women, and children were slaughtered by US forces, who had long been propagandized by the US military to believe that Asians (Japanese) were essentially subhuman and would fight to the last man.  US soldiers were repeatedly ordered to fire on unarmed North Korean civilians “dressed in white” as that was believed to be what the “communists” wore.  It was, in fact, simply traditional Korean dress.

Read Bruce Cumings excellent books on Korea to get a full picture of the monstrous lies being spread by the US propagandists today about the “craziness” of the North Koreans’ leaders.  They are not crazy, they are defending their tiny country from Big, Bad US imperialism which wants to wipe North Korea off the map in revenge for the humiliation of the US at the hands of the heroic North Korean and Chinese workers who turned back the US invasion of Korea in the 50’s.

US/UN/NATO Hands off North Korea!  End the sanctions against the North!  North Korea and Iran have every right to possess nuclear weapons – to defend themselves against the only nation depraved enough to have ever used them: the United States of America!

Reading List: North Korea and the Korean War [UPDATED]

We’d like to help every worker who is curious about the history of the North Korean workers state, and who would like to begin the process of working their way through the massive anti-North Korea propaganda operation being run by US imperialism and its NATO allies.

To this end, we’d like to recommend three books that shine much-needed light on this subject, as well as to send you to the source of news coming directly from the North Korean government itself.

For all your North Korean news from the North Korean side, there is only one source: the official North Korean news agency: the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).  The capitalist press will tell you that you’ll find nothing but pro-regime propaganda there – as if it’s all that different reading the pro-US propaganda in every US news media outlet.   Our perusal of the KCNA website shows that it has a lot of information on the North Korean side of the argument, as well as news on North Korean art, history, culture and tourist attractions.  It’s a lot more interesting that the bourgeois press would have you believe.

The Korean Central News Agency – English Website

For your Korean War history needs, there’s American historian Bruce Cuming’s excellent books:   The Korean War and  Another Country.

“The Korean War” is, in our humble opinion, THE book to read for a very balanced view of the truth of what the United States did to the Korean people in that brutal war.  Once you understand the extent of what the Korean people were forced to live through, you will be far more understanding about why they are so desperately trying to build nuclear weapons to defend their heroic nation from another US attack.

“Another Country” describes more of the history of how the long, storied history of Korea – and especially its long, tortured struggle for independence from Japan and the US –  has created in the North a very different culture from Western society.  It could not have been otherwise.  Cumings, who is a professor of history at the University of Chicago – no hotbed of left-wing politics – is fluent in the Korean language, has visited the country many times and is a Koreaphile while not in any way being a Kim Il Sung fanboy.  Both of these relatively brief books should be required reading before anyone even tries to say a word about the subject.  Do yourselves a favor and pick them up at your library or buy them.

We would also like to recommend an excellent work of fiction by the well-known Chinese exile author Ha Jin:  “War Trash”.

This book – which is based on first-hand accounts of Chinese and Korean prisoners of war during the Korean War – describes in harrowing detail how the US’ South Korean puppet regime of Syngman Rhee systematically tortured and murdered tens of thousands of Communist workers captured during the war.    It’s a real tour of hell and another way you will come to understand why the North Koreans have absolutely no intention of ever letting that shit happen to their citizens ever again.

Last but definitely not least, we would like to suggest for your reading displeasure the harrowing account of just one of the thousands of war crimes committed by the United States military during their rape of Korea: the massacre of hundreds of Korean civilians at No Gun Ri.  It is portrayed quite brilliantly in the Pulitzer-prize winning book  “The Bridge at No Gun Ri”.

This book tells the story of how United States soldiers were ordered to open fire on civilians – men, women and children – in order to stop imaginary “North Korean infiltrators” from crossing the border into the new puppet state of South Korea.  The story is told by people who were there on both sides of the conflict:  Koreans who were children at the time of the massacre, who were shot as they tried to hide from the US soldiers’ bullets and the US Air Force’s strafing jets; as well as in accounts told by US soldiers who were there and dutifully opened fire on the civilians after being ordered to do so.  Voluminous official documentation of the incident from the North and the US is presented.   In this brutal war, this was one of the minor war crimes committed by the US military.

Warmongers of World Capitalism in Hysteria Over Successful N. Korean Satellite Launch

Yesterday, the Stalinist workers state of North Korea successfully launched a rocket that placed a satellite into Earth orbit, setting off a worldwide orgy of condemnation of the so-called “provocative” act.  We say: Congratulations to the North Korean workers on the successful launch of your satellite!  If it helps in any way to defend North Korea from attack by the United States, NATO or the US puppet regime in South Korea, GOOD!

North Korea is not just any country – it is a nation formed in the heat of a decades-long workers struggle to free China and Korean workers from brutal military assault and colonial occupation from first the British, then Japan, then the United States.  The Chinese and Korean workers and peasants heroically fought their capitalist, imperialist oppressors for decades, only succeeding in gaining their independence in 1949 (for China) and 1953 (for what was to become North Korea.  In these vicious wars of liberation, the imperialist powers and their criminal, traitorous lackey governments tortured and slaughtered millions – that is not an exaggeration! – millions of workers and peasants.  In spite of every effort of the US and its allies to crush the Korean workers revolution, the Korean Peoples Army achieved amazing military victories over the puppet “South Korean” military and police forces of the disgusting Syngman Rhee dictatorship – created from whole cloth by the United States and its Office of Strategic Services (the forerunner of the CIA) out of widely despised collaborators of the Japanese occupying forces who brutalized China and Korea from the early 1930s until 1945.   Sadly, massive US military intervention enabled the pathetic remnants of Rhee’s forces to reconquer half of the Korean peninsula, after which they launched murderous reprisals against any Korean worker who ever fought against either the Japanese fascists or who ever participated in the egalitarian local Peoples’ governments that sprang up all over Korea when the Japanese occupation evaporated at the end of WWII.   Using police forces that had collaborated with the hated Japanese military occupiers of Korea, Syngman Rhee’s cops and soldiery rounded up “communists” all over “South Korea” and butchered them by the thousands.   Recently declassified U.S. military accounts of the massacres have proven beyond a doubt that under the U.S. occupation of Korea during and after the Korean War, mass executions were carried out with the full knowledge of the US military in Korea as well as the US civilian government in Washington.  The Korean War is one of the bloodiest chapters in the long, sordid history of the United States, which was born of genocide of the Native American population starting in the 1600s, segued right into the barbarity of the slave trade and then continued to leave a trail of workers blood wherever the US military went, from Mexico in the 1840s to Cuba, the Philippines, Haiti, the USSR, Japan, China, Vietnam, Central and South America and on and on to the present slaughters of civilians in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan.

And these blood-soaked imperialists are now trying to tell the world that a simple satellite launch by North Korea represents a “provocation”!  Truly, there has never been a regime in world history more depraved, more dedicated to using every dirty trick in the book in order to stuff their pockets with blood-drenched cash than the regime of the United States capitalist class!

The lapdogs of US/NATO imperialism at the UN, of course, hypocritically denounce North Korea for ignoring all the sanctions and UN Security Council resolutions that have been passed over the years in a futile effort to get the North Korean workers state to hand itself over to the tender mercies of US imperialism on a silver platter.   All of the imperialist countries whose governments and ruling classes were responsible for the decades-long rape of China and Korea rail against the North Korean workers state for having the nerve to defend itself against nations that have, historically, raped and pillaged both countries with impunity.  The British Foreign Secretary, William Hague, hypocritically stated that “I deplore the fact that the DPRK [Democratic People’s Republic of Korea] has chosen to prioritise this launch over improving the livelihood of its people.”   The Japanese Foreign Ministry, whose predecessors waged merciless war against the Chinese and Korean working classes, torturing and slaughtering hundreds of thousands said that the launch of the North Korean satellite was something they “cannot tolerate”! And the scum in the Democrat Obama White House, whose predecessors oversaw the butchery of so many North Koreans, and whose puppet dictatorships in the 50s, 60s and 70s turned South Korea into a human rights hell-hole had the balls to say “The international community must work in a concerted fashion to send North Korea a clear message that its violations of UN security council resolutions have consequences”!  Shame is something totally alien to these sick puppies of US imperialism, these depraved lickspittle running dogs of the US capitalist class.  And the workers in the US are supposed to believe that the Democrats are “the lesser of two evils”!

But it was precisely the Democrats who are responsible for the world-historic slaughter that was visited upon the Korean working class for daring to try to build a revolutionary workers government in Korea!  It was pathetic mama’s boy Harry Truman who “stood tall” by unleashing his racist military and OSS against the workers of Asia, desperately butchering millions of workers and peasants in order to “save the world” from the overthrow of the greed-based, blood-soaked capitalist system, which had produced two savage world wars in just a few decades!  The Democratic Party – which in the 1950s was the favored party of the Ku Klux Klan in the Jim Crow south – was responsible for every US war crime from the butchering of civilians in air raids in Nazi Germany to the firebombing of Tokyo that killed hundreds of thousands of civilians, to Hiroshima and Nagasaki; and then on to the horrors of Vietnam under that other great hero of the Democrats, anti-communist cretin John F. Kennedy and his “pet projects” in Vietnam and Cuba!  The apples of the Obama administration have not fallen far from the tree that they grew on!

We say, once again: Congratulations, North Korea on your successful satellite launch!  May you have many more in the future!  You have every right to defend yourselves from those who have tortured and murdered your comrades, brothers and sisters, mothers and fathers in the past, and who threaten to do it again today!  You are right to fight them; your cause is the cause of every working-class and peasant man and woman who truly opposes capitalism and imperialism.

US/UN/NATO:  HANDS OFF NORTH KOREA AND CHINA!

The working class of the world must stand up and defend North Korea and China against any and all attempts by the imperialist, colonialist nations to launch military adventures of any kind against these Stalinist workers states.  However, we know that only workers revolutions here in the US and throughout the capitalist world that abolish the capitalist system and establish egalitarian workers governments in its place will be capable of bringing true world peace from the realm of fantasy into reality.  Anything less than world-wide workers revolution will never achieve world-wide peace.  World peace under capitalism is an impossibility: this greed-based system is, even as we speak, preparing for yet another world war to redivide the globe into new spheres of economic exploitation for the capitalists to plunder.  Either the world’s workers will take the guns and missiles away from the greedheads once and for all, or the capitalists will plunge the planet into a world war that will make all previous wars look like a mere prelude.

Workers of the World, Unite!

What the Immediate Aftermath of Hiroshima Looked Like

These photographs were taken in Hiroshima immediately after the bomb exploded.  They show what nuclear war looks like from the perspective of the victims.  [Source: WordPress.com, Iconic Photos, “Hiroshima, August 6, 1945”]  It is not necessary to explain these images.  We append a copy of a statement made by the photographer Yoshito Matsushige describing his experiences that day.

Yoshito Matsushige was a 32 year old cameraman for the Chugoku Newspaper at that time. He was at his home in Midori-cho, 2.7kilometers from the hypocenter when the A-bomb was dropped. He walked around the city right after the bombing and took five photographs which have become important historical documents.

MATSUSHIGE:  “I had finished breakfast and was getting ready to go to the newspaper when it happened. There was a flash from the indoor wires as if lightening had struck. I didn’t hear any sound, how shall I say, the world around me turned bright white. And I was momentarily blinded as if a magnesium light had lit up in front of my eyes. Immediately after that, the blast came. I was bare from the waist up, and the blast was so intense, it felt like hundreds of needles were stabling me all at once. The blast grew large holes in the walls of the first and second floor. I could barely see the room because of all the dirt. I pulled my camera and the clothes issued by the military headquarters out from under the mound of the debris, and I got dressed. I thought I would go to either either the newspaper or to the headquarters. That was about 40 minutes after the blast. Near the Miyuki Bridge, there was a police box. Most of the victims who had gathered there were junior high school girls from the Hiroshima Girls Business School and the Hiroshima Junior High School No.1. they had been mobilized to evacuate buildings and they were outside when the bomb fell. Having been directly exposed to the heat rays, they were covered with blisters, the size of balls, on their backs, their faces, their shoulders and their arms. The blisters were starting to burst open and their skin hung down like rugs. ”

“Some of the children even have burns on the soles of their feet. They’d lost their shoes and run barefoot through the burning fire. When I saw this, I thought I would take a picture and I picked up my camera. But I couldn’t push the shutter because the sight was so pathetic. Even though I too was a victim of the same bomb, I only had minor injuries from glass fragments, whereas these people were dying. It was such a cruel sight that I couldn’t bring myself to press the shutter. Perhaps I hesitated there for about 20 minutes, but I finally summoned up the courage to take one picture. Then, I moved 4 or 5 meters forward to take the second picture. Even today, I clearly remember how the view finder was clouded over with my tears. I felt that everyone was looking at me and thinking angrily, ‘He’s taking our picture and will bring us no help at all.’ Still, I had to press the shutter, so I harden my heart and finally I took the second shot.”

“Those people must have thought me duly cold-hearted. Then, I saw a burnt streetcar which had just turned the corner at Kamiya-cho. There were passengers still in the car. I put my foot onto the steps of the car and I looked inside. There were perhaps 15 or 16 people in front of the car. They laid dead one on top of another. Kamiya-cho was very close to the hypocenter, about 200 meters away. The passengers had stripped them of all their clothes. They say that when you are terrified, you tremble and your hair stands on end. And I felt just this tremble when I saw this scene. I stepped down to take a picture and I put my hand on my camera. But I felt so sorry for these dead and naked people whose photo would be left to posterity that I couldn’t take the shot. Also, in those days we weren’t allowed to publish the photographs of corpses in the newspapers. After that, I walked around, I walked through the section of town which had been hit hardest. I walked for close to three hours. But I couldn’t take even one picture of that central area. There were other cameramen in the army shipping group and also at the newspaper as well. But the fact that not a single one of them was able to take pictures seems to indicate just how brutal the bombing actually was. I don’t pride myself on it, but it’s a small consolation that I was able to take at least five pictures.

“During the war, air-raids took place practically every night. And after the war began, there were many foods shortages. Those of us who experienced all these hardships, we hope that such suffering will never be experienced again by our children and our grandchildren. Not only our children and grandchildren, but all future generations should not have to go through this tragedy. That is why I want young people to listen to our testimonies and to choose the right path, the path which leads to peace.”  [Source: AtomicArchive.com, “Testimony of Yoshito Matsushige”]
